49ers Stun Rams 26-23 in Overtime Behind McCaffrey’s Magic
The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams met on Thursday night in a matchup of 3-1 teams, and fans got a classic. Christian McCaffrey starred for the 49ers, who pulled out a 26-23 overtime win after a back-and-forth game even though they were missing many starters like Brock Purdy and George Kittle.
First Quarter: 49ers Strike First
The 49ers opened strong after a muffed punt that they managed to recover. Mac Jones led a quick drive, hitting McCaffrey and Kendrick Bourne before finding tight end Jake Tonges for a 6-yard touchdown. That gave San Francisco a 7-0 lead.
The Rams tried to answer, but Matthew Stafford was sacked by Bryce Huff and forced to punt. Jones and McCaffrey kept moving the ball, and by the end of the quarter, the 49ers were already inside the Rams’ red zone, looking in control.
Second Quarter: Offenses Heat Up
Jones wasted no time in the second, tossing a short pass to McCaffrey for another touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
The Rams finally got rolling. Stafford connected with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams to set up Kyren Williams, who caught a 14-yard touchdown to cut the score to 14-7.
The 49ers responded before halftime. Bourne made key catches, and kicker Eddie Pineiro nailed a 37-yard field goal as the clock expired. San Francisco went to the locker room up 17-7.
Third Quarter: Rams Claw Back
The Rams opened the half but missed a 53-yard field goal. The 49ers took advantage with a steady drive, capped by Pineiro’s 20-yard kick for a 20-7 lead.
But Stafford didn’t back down. He found Nacua for a short touchdown to cut it to 20-14. After another San Francisco drive stalled, Stafford marched down again, this time hitting Williams for a touchdown. The Rams’ extra point was blocked, though, leaving the game tied 20-20.
Late in the quarter, Pineiro blasted a 59-yard field goal to push San Francisco back in front, 23-20.
Fourth Quarter: Defense Steps Up
The Rams seemed ready to take control when Williams powered the ball inside the 49ers’ 10. But he fumbled at the 2-yard line, and San Francisco recovered!.
The Rams’ defense forced a punt, and Stafford again moved the offense. This time, sophomore kicker Joshua Karty drilled a 48-yard field goal with seconds left to tie the game 23-23 and send it to overtime.
Overtime: McCaffrey and Pineiro Deliver
Overtime started badly for Los Angeles when Karty’s kickoff was too short, placing the 49ers at their own 40 yard line. Jones and McCaffrey went back to work, combining on short passes and runs. Pineiro calmly knocked through a 41-yard field goal, his fourth of the night, to put San Francisco ahead 26-23.
The Rams had one last chance. Stafford hit Tutu Atwell for a big gain, but the drive ended at the San Francisco 11. On third down, Williams was stuffed and fumbled again, sealing the game for the 49ers.
Final Thoughts
McCaffrey carried San Francisco with 139 total yards and a touchdown, while Bourne added over 100 yards receiving. Jones stayed steady despite pressure and even a brief injury scare.
Stafford threw for more than 300 yards and three scores, Nacua caught 10 passes, and Williams totaled two touchdowns, but his late fumbles proved costly.
The 49ers’ win lifts them to 4-1, while the Rams fall to 3-2. It was a thrilling division battle that showed McCaffrey’s magic and San Francisco’s toughness.
