Anthony Davis Is Great, but it’s Time for Dallas to Move On
The Dallas Mavericks surprised everyone on Monday night when they beat 3-time MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, one of the best teams in the NBA. It was a statement win that showed the Mavericks can still compete at a high level. Anthony Davis played a major role and scored 32 points, proving once again that when he is on the court, he is an All-NBA, game-changing superstar.
But even with this huge victory, the Mavericks are 7-15 and still face the same long-term problem: they cannot build their future around a player who might not stay healthy. That means it‘s time to trade Anthony Davis.
Anthony Davis Is Great But Unreliable
Anthony Davis is a dominant force. He is a champion, a future Hall of Famer, and one of the best two-way players in basketball. At 6-foot-10, he blocks shots, guards every position, and can score from anywhere on the floor.
But at age 32, his biggest challenge has not gone away: injuries. Davis has missed games almost every season of his career. In Dallas, the pattern has continued. The Mavericks do not know if he can stay healthy for a full year, and that makes building a team around him very risky.
Dallas traded Luka Doncic because they wanted a new direction. But the Davis era has already been filled with setbacks. A single win over Denver does not erase the long-term concerns.
The Future Belongs to Cooper Flagg
The Mavericks have a new star waiting to take over: Cooper Flagg, the number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Flagg is a 6-foot-9 forward with elite athleticism, strong defense, and advanced scoring skills. Coaches compare him to players like Jayson Tatum and even a young LeBron James. He plays hard, learns fast, and already looks like the face of the franchise.
To unlock Flagg’s full potential, Dallas needs to give him space, touches, and responsibility. That becomes harder with Davis still acting as the main option.
Smart Trade Options
If the Mavericks move Davis, they can get valuable players and picks in return. Two teams in the East make sense:
- Chicago Bulls (9-11)- pairing Davis with Josh Giddey could help them finally reach the playoffs
- Toronto Raptors (15-7)- adding Davis next to Scottie Barnes could turn them into contenders in a weak Eastern Conference
Both teams need a star. Both would trade real assets. And Dallas would get pieces to build around Flagg.
A New Beginning for Dallas
The win over Denver was exciting, but the Mavericks must think about the next decade, not the next game. Cooper Flagg is the future. Trading Anthony Davis may be the move that finally unlocks it.
