Browns Turn to Rookie Dillon Gabriel at Quarterback
The Cleveland Browns are making another change at quarterback after a disappointing start to the 2025 season. At 1-3, the offense has struggled to move the ball, and veteran Joe Flacco hasn’t been able to provide the steady play the team hoped for. Now, the Browns are handing the keys to rookie Dillon Gabriel, their third-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Gabriel Steps In
Dillon Gabriel comes from Oklahoma, where he was known for his leadership and quick release. The Browns drafted him in the third round, hoping he could be a steady option behind Flacco and rookie Shedeur Sanders. Instead, Gabriel has been pushed into the spotlight sooner than expected.
Cleveland hopes Gabriel can bring energy to an offense filled with talent, including tight end David Njoku, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, and rookie running back Quinshon Judkins. Fans hope that he can follow in Jaxson Dart’s footsteps, after the Giants’ rookie quarterback won his debut against the Chargers. Gabriel’s own first start will come this Sunday in London against the Vikings.
Shedeur Sanders Shocked
The decision leaves Shedeur Sanders on the bench, and reports say he was left “literally speechless” when the news broke. Sanders entered the league with plenty of hype, once projected as a top-five pick before sliding to the fifth round. Concerns about his arm strength and difficult pre-draft interviews caused teams to pass, but the Browns believed his potential was worth the risk.
Sanders has shown flashes in practice, but mistakes and inconsistency made the coaching staff hesitate to give him the starting role. For now, he’ll continue to learn while Gabriel gets his chance to lead the team.
Flacco’s Role
Joe Flacco began the season as the starter, but his performances have been uneven. The veteran provided experience, yet turnovers and slow starts stalled the Browns’ offense. While Flacco remains an important mentor, the team believes it’s time to look toward the future.
Looking Ahead
The Browns are betting big on Gabriel to turn things around. His first challenge will be the Vikings in London, a team known for strong pass rushers and playmakers like Justin Jefferson. If Gabriel can handle the moment, Cleveland may finally find the spark it needs. If not, the Browns’ search for answers at quarterback will continue.
