Can the Clippers Turn their Season Around?
The Los Angeles Clippers have finally found some momentum. They are on a four-game winning streak, their longest run of the season. The biggest reason is simple: Kawhi Leonard is scoring like a superstar again. The streak ended with a loud statement on Sunday night, when the Clippers beat the Detroit Pistons 112–99 at home. Leonard dropped a career-high 55 points, and it felt like the arena shook every time he scored.
Oklahoma City owns the Clippers’ first-round pick this year, a leftover cost from the Paul George trade in 2019. Every time the Clippers lose, the pick gets better for the Thunder. And with OKC already sitting on top as the reigning champs, handing them a high draft pick would feel like a nightmare
What’s Behind the Streak?
Kawhi Leonard’s Scoring Surge
Over the last four wins, Leonard has averaged about 39 points per game. In his most recent five games, he scored 22, 32, 41, 28, and then 55 points. That last one was special. Against Detroit, the Eastern Conference’s #1 seed, he shot 17-for-26 from the field and made 16 of his 17 free throws. When Leonard is finishing at the rim, hitting jumpers, and living at the free throw line, defenses run out of answers.
Big Wins Are Building Belief
The streak started with a win over the Lakers. Then the Clippers handled the Rockets 128–108, grabbed a strong road win in Portland, and finished with the Pistons victory. These weren’t lucky wins, either. In several of these games, the Clippers built early double-digit leads and stayed in control, which is a big change from earlier in the season when late-game mistakes kept costing them.
Why the Clippers Fell Behind
A Rough Start and Missing Time
Even with the streak, the Clippers are still below .500 at 10–21 after the Pistons game. Early in the season, Leonard missed time with injuries, and the team never found a steady rhythm. They also lost former All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal for the season, which took away a major scoring option and forced other players into bigger roles than planned. When your stars are missing, it’s tough to build chemistry and even tougher to stack wins.
Life Without Their Big Man
The Clippers have also played several games without starting center Ivica Zubac. Without him, they’ve leaned even more on Leonard and James Harden to create offense. Harden helped in the Pistons win with 28 points, and his passing keeps the attack moving. Luckily, their backup center Brook Lopez is a talented veteran who can protect the rim and stretch the floor. He’s one of the best three-point shooting centers in the league, and he showed it by hitting nine threes in the win over Portland.
What Needs to Happen Next?
Stars Have to Stay Available
On paper, this roster is loaded. Leonard can take over games. Harden is still a smart playmaker. They also have depth with bigs like Zubac, Lopez, and John Collins, plus scoring help like Bogdan Bogdanović. If they stay healthy enough to play together, the Clippers have the talent to climb back into the playoff picture.
The Risks Are Real
The Clippers are older, and Leonard’s health is always the biggest question. There’s also a league investigation hanging over him, which could become a distraction. But if Leonard stays on the court and the team keeps playing with this level of confidence, they can still climb and make sure they don’t accidentally power up the champs in Oklahoma City.
