Colts Crush Raiders 40-6 Behind Daniel Jones and Jonathan Taylor's Dominant Display
The Indianapolis Colts entered Week 5 as the AFC's top seed with an awesome 3-1 record, while the struggling Las Vegas Raiders limped into Lucas Oil Stadium at 1-3. What followed was a complete domination by the home team, as the Colts rolled to a commanding 40-6 victory that showcased exactly why they're sitting atop the conference.
First Quarter: Trading Early Blows
The game started with both teams feeling each other out. The Raiders struck first behind their new offensive system, with rookie sensation Ashton Jeanty making an immediate impact. The first-round pick, who was drafted to be Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly's featured back, showed his versatility early. Quarterback Geno Smith found Jeanty on a beautiful 29-yard pass play that got the Raiders into Colts territory.
Jeanty continued to impress, using his powerful running style to punch through the Colts defense. The rookie running back capped off an impressive opening drive with solid carries, helping the Raiders reach the red zone before settling for a 24-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson. Las Vegas led 3-0 after the first quarter, but the Colts were already showing signs of life.
Daniel Jones, who won the starting quarterback job over Anthony Richardson, began finding his rhythm late in the quarter. The veteran signal-caller connected with his favorite targets Josh Downs and Michael Pittman Jr. to move the ball effectively down the field.
Second Quarter: Colts Take Control
The second quarter belonged entirely to Indianapolis. Jones showed exactly why the Colts chose him as their starter, displaying the pocket-passing accuracy that Richardson had struggled with. The turning point came when Jones found rookie tight end Tyler Warren for a beautiful 19-yard gain, setting up the Colts' first touchdown.
Warren, the first-round pick who was brought in to transform the Colts' tight end position, made his presence felt immediately. Jones capped off the drive by finding Warren in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass, giving Indianapolis a 7-3 lead.
The Colts' defense then stepped up with a crucial blocked punt that gave their offense prime field position. Jonathan Taylor, the star running back who had been searching for his 2025 breakthrough, punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-3.
Jones continued his excellent play, methodically moving the ball down the field. With time running out in the half, he found Pittman for a 4-yard touchdown pass, though the Colts failed on the two-point conversion. Indianapolis took a commanding 20-3 lead into halftime.
Second Half: Complete Domination
The third quarter was all about Jonathan Taylor taking over the game. The veteran running back, playing behind an improved offensive line with Jones under center, looked like his old dominant self. Taylor bulldozed his way to a 1-yard touchdown run, extending the Colts' lead to 26-3.
The Raiders' struggles continued as Smith threw his second interception of the game, this time picked off by cornerback Blackmon who returned it to the Las Vegas 6-yard line. The Colts capitalized immediately with another Taylor touchdown run, this time from 6 yards out. With the successful two-point conversion, Indianapolis led 34-3.
Fourth Quarter: Closing Time
The final quarter was merely a formality. The Raiders managed just one field goal while the Colts continued to control both sides of the ball. Smith finished with 228 passing yards but struggled with two costly interceptions and four sacks.
Taylor ended his dominant performance with 66 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, adding 20 receiving yards. Jones was efficient with 212 passing yards and two touchdown passes, completing 20 of 29 attempts.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves the Colts to 4-1 and strengthens their grip on the AFC's top seed. Their balanced attack with Jones's accuracy and Taylor's power running makes them a dangerous playoff contender. The Raiders fall to 1-4, extending their losing streak despite Jeanty's continued development.
Both teams will look to bounce back next week as they continue their 2025 campaigns in what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
