Commanders Break Eight-Game Skid with 29-21 Victory Over Giants
The Washington Commanders (3-10) traveled to face the New York Giants (2-11) in a Week 15 battle between two teams fighting to avoid the bottom of the standings. Both squads entered this game desperate for a victory after struggling through difficult seasons filled with growing pains and rebuilding efforts.
First Quarter Sets the Tone
The Commanders struck first in this division showdown. After a solid opening drive, kicker Jake Moody connected on a 46-yard field goal to put Washington ahead 3-0. The Giants responded quickly with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart finding his rhythm. Dart completed a beautiful 19-yard pass to Darius Slayton, showing the arm strength that made him a first-round pick. However, the Giants couldn't capitalize on their promising drive, as kicker Younghoe Koo missed a 52-yard field goal attempt wide left.
Washington continued to move the ball effectively behind Marcus Mariota's dual-threat ability. The veteran quarterback used his legs to extend plays and keep drives alive, setting up another scoring opportunity as the quarter ended with the Commanders leading 3-0.
Second Quarter Explosion
The second quarter belonged to the running backs! Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who had been struggling with just a 3.2 yards per carry average all season, finally found his breakthrough moment. The undrafted rookie punched in a 16-yard touchdown run up the middle, giving Washington a 10-0 lead after Moody's extra point.
The Giants answered right back with their own ground game magic. Tyrone Tracy Jr., the former wide receiver turned running back, capped off a beautiful drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. The score was now 10-7, and the game was heating up!
Washington's special teams then delivered a game-changing moment. Return specialist Jamison Lane took a punt 63 yards to the house for a spectacular touchdown! Though Moody missed the extra point, the Commanders now led 16-7.
Just before halftime, Dart threw an interception that was returned deep into Giants territory. Washington capitalized with another Moody field goal, extending their lead to 19-7 at the break.
Third Quarter Adjustments
The Giants came out firing in the third quarter. Dart connected with tight end Theo Johnson for a 24-yard gain, showing the chemistry that has been developing between the rookie quarterback and his receiving targets. Tracy Jr. then caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dart, demonstrating his versatility as both a runner and receiver. The Giants had cut the deficit to 19-14.
Washington answered with more tough running from Croskey-Merritt, who finished the day with 96 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries - easily his best performance of the season.
Fourth Quarter Drama
The final quarter provided plenty of excitement! Terry McLaurin, who had been quiet for most of the game, exploded for a 51-yard touchdown catch from Mariota. This gave the veteran receiver 69 yards and a score, helping Washington extend their lead to 26-14.
The Giants fought back when Dart found Wan'Dale Robinson for a 16-yard touchdown pass. Robinson continued his breakout season with solid production, giving the Giants hope at 26-21.
However, the Commanders sealed the victory when the Giants fumbled in the fourth quarter, allowing Washington to run out the clock and secure their first win in nine games.
Looking Ahead
This victory moves Washington to 4-10 and provides hope for their young players heading into the final weeks. For the Giants, now 2-12, the loss extends their difficult season, but Dart showed continued development in his rookie campaign.
Both teams will look to build momentum as they prepare for their next matchups in the final stretch of the season.
