Cowboys Storm Past Commanders 30-23 in Christmas Day Showdown
Christmas Day brought football fans an exciting NFC East battle as the Dallas Cowboys (6-8-1) traveled to face the Washington Commanders (4-11) in a game where both teams looked to finish their disappointing seasons on a positive note.
First Quarter: Cowboys Strike First
The Cowboys wasted no time making their mark on Christmas Day. After a steady drive that showcased their offensive weapons, quarterback Dak Prescott found tight end Jake Ferguson in the red zone for a 6-yard touchdown pass. The drive featured excellent contributions from George Pickens, who hauled in a crucial 19-yard reception to set up the score.
Washington answered right back with an impressive drive of their own. Veteran quarterback Josh Johnson connected with Deebo Samuel for a spectacular 41-yard gain that brought the crowd to its feet. However, the Commanders had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by kicker Moody, making the score 7-3 after one quarter.
Second Quarter: Explosive Plays Light Up the Scoreboard
The second quarter belonged to big plays and quick strikes. Dallas extended their lead when running back Javonte Williams punched in a 4-yard touchdown run, capping off another methodical drive. Williams, who has enjoyed a career revival with the Cowboys this season, showed the power and determination that made him a key offseason addition.
Then came the play of the game. Facing pressure deep in their own territory, Prescott launched a perfect pass to speedster KaVontae Turpin, who raced 86 yards for a touchdown that sent the Dallas sideline into celebration. The explosive play showcased Turpin's game-breaking speed and Prescott's ability to create magic under pressure.
Washington refused to fold, however. Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, who has found his groove late in the season, bulldozed his way into the end zone from 10 yards out for his second consecutive game with a touchdown. The Cowboys managed a 42-yard field goal before halftime, taking a 24-17 lead into the locker room.
Second Half: Defense and Field Goals
The third quarter saw Washington strike quickly with a game-changing play. Croskey-Merritt broke free for a stunning 72-yard touchdown run, showing the breakaway speed that has made him a bright spot for the Commanders down the stretch. His 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns proved he's developing into a reliable weapon for Washington's future.
Dallas responded with a methodical drive that resulted in a 52-yard field goal, maintaining their lead at 27-24 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Cowboys Close It Out
The final quarter became a battle of field goals and clock management. Both teams traded scoring opportunities, with Washington managing a 51-yard field goal to tie the game at 27-27. However, Dallas showed their championship experience in crunch time.
A crucial 51-yard field goal gave the Cowboys the lead they would not surrender. Despite Prescott taking six sacks throughout the game, he finished with 307 passing yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball effectively to his receivers.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves Dallas to 7-8-1, giving them something positive to build on heading into the offseason. For Washington, the loss drops them to 4-12, but the continued development of players like Croskey-Merritt and the solid play of their receiving corps provides hope for next season.
Both teams will look to finish their seasons strong in Week 18 as they prepare for important offseason decisions and roster moves.
