Commanders Storm Past Chargers Behind Daniels Magic and Rookie Power
The Washington Commanders traveled to Los Angeles with something to prove, and they delivered in spectacular fashion! The Commanders dominated the Chargers 27-10 in a thrilling Week 5 showdown that showcased why young quarterback Jayden Daniels is becoming one of the NFL's most exciting players.
Both teams entered this fighting for playoff position in their respective conferences. The Chargers desperately needed a home victory to get back on track. Meanwhile, the Commanders looked to build momentum behind their sophomore quarterback and newly acquired weapons.
First Quarter: Chargers Strike First
The game started with fireworks as Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert showed off his mobility with a spectacular 41-yard scramble that had fans jumping out of their seats! Herbert then connected with rookie running back Omarion Hampton twice before finding receiver Ladd McConkey in the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown. The extra point by kicker Dicker made it 7-0 Chargers.
The Commanders answered quickly, though, thanks to their exciting rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt. The seventh-round pick, who wasn't even expected to play much this season, began showing why he's become such an important part of Washington's offense. The quarter ended with Los Angeles leading 10-0 after a successful 55-yard field goal.
Second Quarter: Rookie Magic Takes Over
This is where the game completely changed! Croskey-Merritt, the unlikely hero, punched in a 15-yard touchdown run to put the Commanders on the board. The young runner showed incredible vision and power, proving that sometimes the best players come from unexpected places.
Late in the quarter, Daniels put on a show! The second-year quarterback completed a beautiful 50-yard pass to Luke McCaffrey, then found veteran receiver Deebo Samuel for a 22-yard completion. A field goal before halftime tied the game 10-10, setting up an exciting second half.
Third Quarter: Washington Takes Control
The Commanders came out of halftime looking unstoppable! Croskey-Merritt continued his breakout performance with another touchdown run, this time from 5 yards out. The rookie's powerful running style reminded everyone why coaches love players who never give up on their dreams.
Daniels showed why he had such an amazing rookie season, using both his arm and legs to move the offense. He completed passes to Samuel and other receivers while scrambling for crucial first downs. A field goal extended Washington's lead to 20-10 entering the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Sealing the Victory
The Chargers tried to mount a comeback, but the Commanders' defense came up with a huge interception by a Washington defensive back. This turnover led to another scoring drive, capped off by Daniels finding Samuel for an 8-yard touchdown pass with just over a minute remaining.
Daniels finished with an impressive stat line: 231 passing yards, 39 rushing yards, and 1 touchdown pass. Samuel caught 8 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, showing why the Commanders traded for the versatile receiver. Croskey-Merritt rushed for multiple touchdowns, proving that hard work and determination can overcome any draft position.
For the Chargers, Herbert threw for 166 yards and 1 touchdown but struggled under pressure with 4 sacks. Hampton managed 44 rushing yards on 12 carries, while McConkey caught 5 passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.
Looking Ahead
This victory moves the Commanders to 4-2 and shows they're becoming a real threat in the NFC. The combination of Daniels' dual-threat ability and unexpected contributors like Croskey-Merritt makes this team dangerous for any opponent.
The Chargers fall to 3-3 and extend their losing streak to three games. They'll need to regroup quickly and find ways to better protect Herbert while getting their running game going with Hampton.
Both teams will look to bounce back next week as they continue their 2025 campaigns in what promises to be an exciting NFL season!
