Broncos Survive Washington Rally to Keep Perfect Streak Alive
The Denver Broncos arrived in Washington carrying a perfect 9-2 record and an eight-game winning streak that had transformed them into one of the NFL's biggest surprises. Their young quarterback Bo Nix had been leading this remarkable turnaround under coach Sean Payton's guidance. Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders entered at 3-8, desperately searching for answers with veteran Marcus Mariota under center and playmakers like Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel trying to spark their struggling offense.
First Quarter: Broncos Strike Early
Denver wasted no time establishing their dominance. After forcing Washington to punt on their opening drive, the Broncos marched downfield with Bo Nix finding his reliable targets. The young quarterback connected with tight end Adam Trautman for 13 yards and hit Troy Franklin for a beautiful 17-yard gain down the right sideline. When the drive stalled in the red zone, kicker Wil Lutz knocked through a 33-yard field goal to put Denver ahead 3-0.
Washington responded with their best drive of the early going. Marcus Mariota found veteran tight end Zach Ertz multiple times, including a 5-yard completion that moved the chains. The Commanders methodically moved into Denver territory, but their promising drive ended at the Denver 23-yard line as the first quarter concluded.
Second Quarter: Explosive Plays and Lead Changes
The second quarter opened with fireworks. Denver's defense forced a crucial turnover when linebacker Dredrick Greenlaw intercepted a Mariota pass intended for running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and returned it 27 yards to set up excellent field position.
Bo Nix capitalized on the gift, engineering a methodical scoring drive. He found Trautman for 22 yards and connected with rookie running back RJ Harvey for 8 yards out of the backfield. After a Lutz field goal made it 6-0, Washington finally answered back.
The Commanders put together their most impressive drive of the game, with Mariota showing his dual-threat ability by scrambling for 12 yards. A beautiful 21-yard strike to Ertz moved Washington deep into Denver territory, and Rodriguez Jr. punched it in from 8 yards out for the touchdown. Washington led 7-6 with 2:25 remaining in the half.
Denver refused to let Washington take momentum into halftime. Nix orchestrated a brilliant two-minute drill, finding Evan Engram three times for crucial completions. The drive culminated when Nix hit veteran receiver Courtland Sutton for an 11-yard touchdown with just 28 seconds left, giving Denver a 13-7 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter: Trading Blows
Washington opened the second half with renewed energy. Mariota connected with Ertz for 18 yards and scrambled for 19 yards himself, showing the mobility that made him a former first-round pick. The drive ended when Mariota found Trey Burks for a 5-yard touchdown, putting Washington back ahead 14-13.
Denver answered right back with their most explosive drive of the game. Nix found Sutton for a spectacular 31-yard completion, then connected with Pat Bryant for 21 yards. Harvey capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, his first of two scores on the day. Denver led 20-14 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Heart-Stopping Finish
The final quarter featured dramatic momentum swings. Washington kicked a field goal to cut Denver's lead to 20-17, then their defense forced a crucial turnover when linebacker Bobby Wagner intercepted Nix to set up another scoring opportunity.
After trading possessions, Denver appeared to seal the victory in overtime when Harvey scored his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run, giving the Broncos a 27-17 lead.
But Washington refused to quit. Mariota led a furious comeback drive, finding McLaurin for 20 yards and Samuel for 38 yards down to the Denver 2-yard line. McLaurin caught the game-tying touchdown with 2:47 remaining, but Washington's two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Denver with a narrow 27-26 victory.
Looking Ahead
This victory extends Denver's remarkable winning streak to nine games and improves their record to 10-2, keeping them firmly in control of their playoff destiny. Bo Nix threw for 321 yards while Harvey contributed 35 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
Washington's record drops to 3-9, but they showed tremendous fight in nearly completing an incredible comeback. Mariota threw for 294 yards and added 55 rushing yards, while Ertz caught 10 passes for 106 yards.
The Broncos will look to extend their streak next week, while Washington continues their search for answers as they try to build on this competitive performance.
