Don’t Look Now, but the Lakers Are Elite Again
The Los Angeles Lakers have stormed into the 2025 NBA season with confidence, heart, and a few surprises. Despite early injuries, they’ve raced out to a 7–2 record and now sit in second place in the Western Conference, just behind the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. After a rocky few years, it’s fair to say the Lakers are back.
A Hot Start to the Season
The Lakers began their season against solid Western Conference teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors. Their early schedule tested them, but it also proved they can compete with anyone.
Luka Dončić came out blazing, scoring an incredible 49 points against the Timberwolves on October 24. Just two days later, when Dončić was sidelined, Austin Reaves exploded for 51 points in a thrilling win over the Sacramento Kings. Their ability to take turns leading the team shows just how much offensive firepower the Lakers now have.
In a recent victory over the Miami Heat (130–120) on November 2, Dončić notched a triple-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Reaves added 26 points and 11 assists, showing their growing chemistry. Three days later, a win over the Spurs pushed the Lakers to 7–2, one of the best starts in the league.
New Faces, Familiar Challenges
Last summer, the Lakers shocked the basketball world by trading Anthony Davis and single first round pick for Luka Dončić. The move signaled a bold new direction, building around Luka’s playmaking instead of LeBron James’s scoring.
They also added Deandre Ayton to fix their rebounding and defense issues, while Marcus Smart brings leadership and toughness. LeBron James, now 40, remains the team’s emotional leader, though he’s missed the start of the season with a sciatica injury. His return is expected soon, and when he’s back, the Lakers could become even more dangerous.
Early Signs of Something Special
The Lakers’ five-game win streak has been powered by different heroes every night. Even without LeBron, their depth and teamwork have kept them rolling. They face the Atlanta Hawks next, another chance to prove this start is no fluke.
If Dončić continues to play at an MVP level and Reaves keeps improving, the Lakers could be more than a playoff team, they could be contenders again.
