Jaxon Smith-Njigba Wins Offensive Player of the Year
A Season to Remember
This season, Jaxon Smith-Njigba didn't just play great football. He made history. The Seattle Seahawks wide receiver won Offensive Player of the Year (OPOY) honors and now has a chance to finish the story by winning the Super Bowl this weekend.
Smith-Njigba's season was so special that people across the NFL couldn't ignore it. In just his 3rd season in the NFL, he became one of the best players in the entire league, not just one of the best receivers.
The Awards He Won
Smith-Njigba won The Sporting News NFL Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Seahawks player ever to earn that award. He also won Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) Offensive Player of the Year, making him only the second Seahawk to ever win it. That's elite company, and it shows just how great his season was.
The Stats That Shocked the League
Smith-Njigba's numbers tell the story of his greatness:
- 119 catches
- 1,793 receiving yards (most in the NFL)
- 10 touchdowns
- Over 105 yards per game
Nearly half of Seattle's total receiving yards came from him alone. Every week, defenses knew the ball was going his way, and they still couldn't stop him.
Why Voters Picked Him
What made Smith-Njigba stand out was his consistency. In 16 of 17 games, he had at least 5 catches and 72 yards. He showed up every single week.
Even more impressive? He did this on a 14–3 Seahawks team that didn't have many other star players on offense. The Seahawks won the NFC West and reached the Super Bowl because Smith-Njigba was their engine.
Changing the Seahawks' Identity
Seattle has always been known as a run-first team. That changed this season. The offense was built around Smith-Njigba and his quarterback Sam Darnold. Big plays, clutch catches, and constant production forced defenses to focus on him. Because of his greatness, the Seahawks became a team that leaned on the passing game, and it worked.
One More Goal: Win It All
Now, Smith-Njigba is headed to the Super Bowl with a chance to complete one of the greatest seasons ever by a wide receiver. An OPOY trophy is already his. A championship would make his season legendary.
