Michael Porter Jr.: A Star Grows in Brooklyn
When Michael Porter Jr. first arrived in the NBA, many people believed he could be a superstar. He was 6-foot 10-inches tall, athletic, and one of the best shooters at his age. But injuries almost stopped that dream before it could begin. Now, years later, Porter is finally showing the world what he can do as a rising star with the Brooklyn Nets.
A Tough Start Filled With Injuries
Porter’s story did not start smoothly. In college, a serious back injury limited him to just a few games. That injury scared teams, and even though he was once expected to be the #1 pick, he slipped to the middle of the NBA Draft. After being selected by the Denver Nuggets, Porter missed his entire rookie season while recovering from back surgery.
Even after returning, injuries kept slowing him down. He worked hard to stay healthy and slowly became an important scorer in Denver, averaging close to 20 points per game. Porter helped the Nuggets win an NBA championship in 2023, but he was often the third or fourth option on offense. His talent was clear, however he did not always get the chance to shine.
A Fresh Start With the Nets
Porter's chance came when he was traded to Brooklyn. With the Nets, he has been given a bigger role and more responsibility. Instead of standing in the corner, Porter became a go-to scorer. He started taking more shots, attacking the basket, and leading the team on offense. His confidence grew, and so did his numbers. Now he's averaging 26 points per game and shooting 3s over everyone!
Porter says his coach's belief in him has made the biggest difference.
“When an organization believes in you… whether you have good games or bad games, that can change a whole player's production, it could change his confidence, especially as a young player… I just think Jordi and the whole Nets organization has done a great job of that with me and with the whole team."
That coach is Jordi Fernández, who has helped create a positive, supportive environment in Brooklyn.
A Statement Game Against Denver
One of Porter’s biggest moments this season came on Sunday January 4th against his old team, the Nuggets. Facing the franchise where his career began, Porter played with confidence and energy putting up 27 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. He scored efficiently, rebounded hard, and showed how much he has grown as a player.
That game was more than just a win. It was proof that Michael Porter Jr. is no longer just a player with potential. In Brooklyn, after years of setbacks, he is finally becoming the star many believed he could be.
