Braves Strike First, But Reds Fight Back
The Braves rolled into Cincinnati's stadium on Sunday looking to stay hot. They were down 3-0 the night before but bounced back to win 5-2 on Saturday. Now they wanted to keep the winning rolling.
Ronald Acuña Jr. wasted zero time. In the first inning, he stepped up against Nick Lodolo and crushed a fastball deep to left-center field. The ball screamed 438 feet and landed in the stands. One swing. One swing gave Atlanta the lead.
But Cincinnati answered right back. JJ Bleday ripped a double into right field. Elly De La Cruz raced home from first base. Just like that, the game was tied 1-1. These teams were trading punches early, and you could feel the tension building.
Mateo's Blast and Cincinnati's Answer
The score stayed tied through the second inning. Then Atlanta struck again in the fifth. Jorge Mateo stepped in against Lodolo and was ready. He swung at a 92 mph sinker and connected perfectly. The ball soared 425 feet to left-center field. Atlanta led 2-1.
Cincinnati had other plans. Will Benson smacked a double into right field in the fourth inning. Spencer Steer raced home on the play. The Reds were down just 2-1 now. Then in the fifth, Eugenio Suárez lifted a fly ball to right field. Matt McLain sprinted home from third. Cincinnati closed the gap to 2-2, then 2-3 as the Reds kept scratching and clawing for every run they could get.
Reds Pull Away Late for the Win
Austin Riley gave Atlanta another run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Harris II scored and the Braves led 3-4 now. But Cincinnati wasn't finished. In the sixth, P.J. Higgins doubled to right field. Spencer Steer crossed home plate. The Reds tied it again.
Then came the seventh inning. Dylan Dodd took the mound for Atlanta. Eugenio Suárez stepped up and launched a cutter into the air. The ball flew 387 feet to center field and disappeared over the wall. Suárez's solo home run put Cincinnati ahead 6-3. That was it. The Reds held tight and won 6-4. Atlanta dropped to 40-21. Cincinnati climbed to 30-29.
