Marlins Scratch Out Early Lead at Home
The Baltimore Orioles visited the Miami Marlins on Thursday, May 7, looking to build on their 7-4 victory from the previous night. However, the Marlins had other plans and struck first. In the bottom of the first inning, Hicks connected on an 88 mph slider and sent a towering blast 386 feet into right center field. The ball soared high over the wall as the crowd erupted. Norby scored ahead of him, giving Miami a quick 2-0 advantage. Although the Orioles' pitching staff had been critical to their turnaround plans, Cade Povich faced immediate pressure. The Marlins' early aggression set the tone for what would become a back-and-forth battle throughout the afternoon.
Orioles Chip Away While Marlins Score Again
The Orioles began their comeback in the third inning when Henderson singled to center, driving in Mayo. That made the score 2-1, cutting into Miami's lead. But the Marlins answered right back in the bottom of the third. Norby delivered a single to left field, scoring Sanoja and extending Miami's advantage to 3-1. Neither team pulled away, and both offenses kept fighting for control. In the fourth inning, O'Neill singled to right for Baltimore, bringing in Basallo and making it 3-2. Then in the eighth inning, Alonso came through with another single to center, scoring Ward and tying the game at 3-3. The momentum had shifted several times, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout the afternoon.
Marlins Win on Error in Thrilling Ninth
The game remained tied at 3-3 heading into the ninth inning, and both teams wanted victory badly. In the bottom of the ninth, the Marlins finally found their breakthrough. Mack reached base when Mayo, the Orioles' third baseman, made a throwing error. The ball sailed wild, allowing Mack to score from second base as Sanoja reached first safely on the same play. That gave Miami a 4-3 victory in dramatic fashion. The Marlins' comeback proved resilience after falling behind, while the Orioles had clawed back twice but couldn't hold on. Both teams finished with identical 17-21 records, showing how closely matched they were in this competitive May matchup.
