White Sox Strike First with Power Hitting
The Chicago Cubs traveled to face the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, May 16, hoping to build on their impressive 29-17 record. The Cubs had just beaten the White Sox 10-5 the previous game, so they arrived with momentum. However, the home team had other plans. Starting pitcher Jameson Taillon took the mound for Chicago while Davis Martin pitched for the White Sox. From the very first inning, the White Sox showed their power. Vargas launched a three-run home run that traveled 421 feet to left center, scoring Antonacci and Murakami along the way. The ball soared off his bat at 108 mph with a launch angle of 24 degrees. The White Sox quickly established a 3-0 lead before the Cubs could even get started.
White Sox Sluggers Continue Home Run Barrage
The White Sox refused to let up after Vargas's opening blast. In the third inning, Murakami stepped up and crushed a changeup that traveled 391 feet to center field, extending the lead to 4-0. Just moments later, with two outs and the bases still loaded, Colson Montgomery added another home run that flew 442 feet to right field. The umpire reviewed the play to confirm it was indeed a home run, and the call stood. Montgomery's exit velocity reached 112 mph, making it one of the hardest hit balls of the day. The White Sox had already scored five runs in just three innings. By the fifth inning, Murakami struck again with a two-run home run that sailed 428 feet to center, pushing the advantage to 7-0.
Cubs Rally Late But White Sox Hold Strong
The Cubs finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Amaya hit a home run to left center, traveling 372 feet off a slider pitch. That made the score 7-1. The White Sox answered right back when Benintendi hammered a home run to right center that went 406 feet, stretching the lead to 8-1. The Cubs mounted a late comeback attempt in the ninth inning. Crow-Armstrong blasted a two-run home run to right field that traveled 380 feet, scoring Conforto and cutting the deficit to 8-3. Unfortunately for Chicago, time ran out. The White Sox held on to win 8-3, improving their record to 23-22. The Cubs fell to 29-18 despite their ninth-inning effort. This loss snapped their winning momentum from the previous game.
