Cubs beat Rays 9–2 at home in Tampa
The Chicago Cubs visited Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg to face the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday, April 7. Both teams wanted a win to help their young seasons, and the Cubs left with a big 9–2 victory. The game started quietly, but Chicago’s offense built momentum early and kept pressure on the Rays’ pitchers. Javier Assad started for the Cubs and Mason Englert began for Tampa Bay, so the pitching matchup mattered. The Cubs used a steady attack and a few big swings to pull away, while the Rays managed only a late rally that fell short.
Early scoring and the big middle innings
Chicago struck first in the second inning with two runs. Michael Conforto singled to right and David Swanson scored after a hard 106 mph hit. Then Patrick Shaw doubled and Conforto scored to make it 2–0. The Cubs kept adding in the third after a throwing error by Tampa Bay’s catcher Fortes let Alex Bregman and others score, pushing the lead to 4–0. The Cubs built a big lead because their hitters stayed patient and made smart swings. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s pitching tried to hold them back, but fielding mistakes and loud hits gave Chicago control of the game early.
Late homers, final rallies, and takeaways
The Cubs added insurance runs later to lock the game. In the seventh, Crow-Armstrong hit a towering home run to right that traveled 389 feet and made it 6–0. Chicago tacked on another run in the eighth when Nico Hoerner’s single scored Dansby Swanson. Tampa Bay fought back with two runs in the eighth on doubles and an infield single, but they could not close the gap. In the ninth, Ballesteros smashed a two-run homer and the ball cleared the wall for 379 feet, finishing the scoring at 9–2. The Cubs left Tampa with a confident win and stronger offense.
