Mets Strike Fast After Two Straight Losses
The Mets came into Wednesday needing a win badly. They had dropped two straight games at home to the Reds and sat at 23-33 for the season. New York hadn't won since Tuesday. Cincinnati arrived at Citi Field with a 29-26 record, riding a one-game losing streak themselves. Both teams were hungry for victory. The Mets were about to get it. This game would tell the story of hot bats early and pitching that held strong late. Juan Soto and Eric Wagaman launched home runs to build an early lead. The Reds fought back with a couple of runs, but the Mets' bullpen slammed the door shut. Final score: New York 4, Cincinnati 2. The Mets grabbed their first win of the series.
Soto and Wagaman Go Deep Early
Juan Soto stepped up to the plate in the first inning with Andrew Abbott on the mound for Cincinnati. Abbott threw a curve ball on his third pitch, and Soto connected. The ball shot into right field and sailed over the wallβ366 feet of pure power. The Mets led 1-0. One inning later, Eric Wagaman came up in the second. Abbott was still pitching strong but made a mistake. He left a four-seam fastball over the middle, and Wagaman crushed it deep to left field. The ball traveled 415 feet and cleared the fence easily. Now the Mets led 2-0. Abbott was in trouble early. The Reds needed their bats to catch up quickly before the deficit grew too large.
Reds Chip Away But Mets Hold On Late
Cincinnati's Nathaniel Lowe singled up the middle in the third inning, and Elly De La Cruz raced home to score. The Reds had cut it to 2-1. Things got tight in the fifth when Carson Benge lined a single to center field. Brett Baty scored from third. Now it was 3-1, Mets. The Reds kept fighting. In the sixth inning, Sal Stewart reached on an infield single to third base. Tyler Stephenson scored from second, making it 3-2. Cincinnati was breathing down New York's neck. But the Mets' bullpen took over from there. Luke Weaver and Devin Williams kept the Reds quiet. New York added one more run in the seventh when Benge singled again, scoring Jared Young. Final: Mets 4, Reds 2. New York improved to 24-33 and snapped their losing streak.
