The Cleveland Guardians visited Busch Stadium on Wednesday to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in a competitive matchup. This was the second game between these teams this week, following Tuesday's exciting 6-5 Cardinals victory. Going into Wednesday's game, Cleveland carried a 10-9 record while St. Louis stood at 10-8 with momentum on their side. Both teams knew pitching would be crucial. Slade Cecconi took the mound for Cleveland while Dustin May started for the Cardinals. However, the Cardinals answered back quickly, tying the game at one in the second inning. This early scoring suggested an entertaining game ahead, with both offenses ready to compete.
Cardinals Take Control with Strong Sixth Inning
The middle innings saw the Cardinals slowly build their advantage. Although Cleveland's Cecconi was throwing well, St. Louis kept chipping away. In the sixth inning, everything changed for the Cardinals. PagĂ©s had already singled to left in the second inning to tie the game. Then in the crucial sixth, Wetherholt hit a sacrifice fly that scored Winn, giving St. Louis a 2-1 lead. But that wasn't allâBurleson followed with a single to center that scored two more runs. Suddenly the Cardinals led 4-1 with their offense clicking. This offensive explosion in the sixth inning proved to be the turning point. Guardians Mount Late Rally but Fall Short
Cleveland refused to quit. In the seventh inning, the Guardians launched a comeback attempt. Naylor came through with a crucial double to center that scored both Schneemann and Hoskins, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and energizing the team. However, the Cardinals responded immediately in their half of the seventh. Church doubled to right and scored on the play, extending St. Louis's lead back to 5-3. As the final innings unfolded, the Guardians couldn't generate enough runs to complete their comeback. Cleveland's bats went quiet over the final two innings, unable to threaten again. The Cardinals held firm defensively and on the mound. St. Louis captured a 5-3 victory, improving to 11-8 while Cleveland dropped to 10-10. Both teams showed character in this competitive matchup.
