Rockies Strike First in Desert Showdown
The Colorado Rockies rolled into Arizona on Saturday hungry for a second straight win. They came into Chase Field looking to bounce back after losing to the Diamondbacks 2-1 the night before. Michael Soroka took the mound for Arizona, while Tomoyuki Sugano pitched for Colorado. The Diamondbacks got on the board first in the second inning when Lourdes Gurriel Jr. lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Nolan Arenado tagged up and sprinted home with the go-ahead run. Arizona led 1-0 early, but Colorado's bats were just warming up. The Rockies knew they had time to answer back. The crowd at Chase Field settled in for what looked like a tight contest between two division rivals.
Colorado Takes the Lead in the Middle Innings
The Rockies tied things up in the fourth inning when Gurriel Jr. singled to left field. Geraldo Perdomo crossed the plate to make it 1-1. Then in the fifth inning, Colorado took their first lead of the day. Jake McCarthy stepped up with two outs and smoked a sacrifice fly to right field. Castro came sprinting home and Tovar moved to third. The score was now 2-1 Rockies. Colorado's bats were clicking, and they had momentum on their side. Arizona needed to answer fast if they wanted to stay in this game. The Diamondbacks' pitching staff was giving up crucial runs at exactly the wrong moments.
Late Drama Seals Rocky Mountain Victory
The game stayed tight through the middle innings. Then in the eighth, the Rockies struck again. TJ Rumfield doubled down the right field line, and Hunter Goodman raced home from second base. Colorado extended their lead to 3-2. Arizona tried to fight back in the ninth, but the Rockies' pitchers shut the door tight. Chad Stevens added one more run for Colorado with a single to right, giving them some breathing room. The final score was Colorado 3, Arizona 2. The Rockies improved to 20-32 with this road win. Arizona dropped to 26-24, losing back-to-back games to their division rivals. This was huge for Colorado's confidence heading forward.
