Rockies Explode in the Fifth Inning
The Colorado Rockies visited Pittsburgh on Wednesday, May 13, ready to take on the Pirates at PNC Park. Before this game, the Pirates had beaten the Rockies 3-1 just recently, so Colorado was hungry for revenge. Pittsburgh came out strong early, scoring two runs in the second inning when Davis grounded into a fielder's choice. Reynolds added another run in the third with a single to right, giving the Pirates a 3-0 lead. However, everything changed when the Rockies came to bat in the fifth inning. That's when Colorado's bats caught fire and turned the game completely around with six explosive runs that shocked the Pirates and their fans watching at home.
Moniak's Home Run Puts Rockies on Top
During the fifth inning, the Rockies kept fighting back against Mitch Keller's pitches. Karros singled to left to score the first run, making it 3-1. Then McCarthy doubled to right, bringing another run home and tying the game. Tovar followed with a single to right that scored Karros, giving Colorado the lead 3-3. But the biggest moment came when Moniak stepped up to the plate with two outs. He crushed a sweeper pitch and launched a massive three-run home run 372 feet to right field. That shot soared over the wall and scored Tovar and Sullivan as well, giving Colorado a 6-3 lead they would not give up for the rest of the game.
Rockies Hold Strong to Win 10-4
After taking the lead in the fifth, the Rockies kept their advantage while the Pirates tried to fight back. O'Hearn hit a solo home run for Pittsburgh in the sixth inning, making it 6-4, but Colorado wasn't done scoring. In the eighth inning, Rumfield crushed a 415-foot home run to right center that extended the lead to 7-4. The ninth inning brought more Rockies runs as Sullivan grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Doyle on a throwing error. Then Moniak came through again with a triple that scored Tovar and Castro, sealing the victory at 10-4. This dominant win improved Colorado's record and showed they could compete at the highest level despite the difficult Coors Field environment.
