Pirates Strike Early at Coors Field
The Colorado Rockies traveled to Pittsburgh for a Thursday night matchup against the Pirates. After losing to Pittsburgh 10-4 just the day before at Coors Field, Colorado hoped to bounce back with Chase Dollander on the mound. However, the Pirates came ready to play and attacked immediately. In the bottom of the first inning, Reynolds singled to left, bringing Cruz home for the game's opening run. Minutes later, O'Hearn launched a towering home run deep to center field, traveling 413 feet and scoring Reynolds as well. Pittsburgh's aggressive start put them ahead 3-0 before Colorado could even get a hit. The Pirates' early momentum proved difficult for the young Rockies to overcome. Playing at Coors Field gave Pittsburgh confidence, and their pitching staff felt prepared for the challenge ahead.
Pirates Extend Lead With Big Third Inning
The Pirates weren't finished scoring in the early innings. During the third inning, Pittsburgh's offense exploded again with two more crucial plays. First, Rodríguez singled to center field, allowing both Griffin and O'Hearn to cross home plate. The single covered just 149 feet but was perfectly placed, bringing the Pirates' lead to 5-0. Moments later, Cruz grounded out to shortstop, but his hard contact pushed Ozuna across for another run. Pittsburgh now led 6-0, and the Rockies seemed overwhelmed by Pittsburgh's strong pitching and timely hitting. Colorado finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Johnston doubled to right field with runners in scoring position. Castro and Rumfield both scored on the double, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Despite Colorado's attempt to battle back, Pittsburgh's early dominance made catching up extremely difficult for the visiting Rockies.
Pirates Finish Strong, Rockies Fall Short
Colorado couldn't quite recover from Pittsburgh's powerful start. In the fifth inning, Triolo added another run for the Pirates with a single to center field, scoring Horwitz and extending Pittsburgh's lead to 7-2. From that point on, neither team scored again, and the game finished with Pittsburgh winning 7-2. The Pirates' pitching staff delivered solid performance throughout, keeping Colorado's bats quiet for most of the game. Pittsburgh's victory improved their record to 24-20 and gave them momentum heading forward. Meanwhile, Colorado fell to 17-27 after the loss, making their playoff hopes increasingly difficult. Chase Dollander's performance on the mound couldn't contain Pittsburgh's offense. Despite Johnston's late-game efforts and Colorado's fourth-inning rally, the Pirates simply played the more complete game on Thursday night.
