Torres and Perez Go Deep Early
The Detroit Tigers came to Tampa Bay hungry for another win. The night before, they'd beaten the Rays 10-9 in an explosive slugfest. Now they wanted more. Jack Flaherty took the mound for Detroit, ready to silence the Rays bats. In the first inning, Gleyber Torres stepped up and crushed a 93-mile-per-hour sinker 433 feet into center field. The ball soared over the wall and Detroit led 1-0. Matt Vierling scored on a sacrifice fly next. Then in the second inning, Wenceel Perez followed with his own blast to left fieldâ404 feet of pure power. Torkelson had walked earlier, and both runners crossed home plate. Detroit was already up 4-0, and the game felt over before it barely started.
The Onslaught Continues in the Sixth
The Tigers weren't done. In the sixth inning, they added three more runs to crush Tampa Bay's hopes. Zack Short stepped up and drove a fly ball deep to center field. Torkelson tagged up and raced home. McKinstry was on base ready to advance. The Rays couldn't stop the bleeding. Then Matt Vierling came through with another fly ball hit to left, and Perez scored easily. Detroit led 7-0 and the Rays looked lost at the plate. Steven Matz couldn't find his rhythm for Tampa Bay. He gave up five runs in just one and two-thirds innings before getting pulled. The Detroit bats were relentless, putting pressure on every pitch. By the end of the inning, Tampa Bay faced a mountain they couldn't climb.
Greene Homers as Tigers Finish Strong
Riley Greene put the final stamp on Detroit's complete performance. In the seventh inning, he launched a home run to right fieldâ328 feet of power that left no doubt. The score jumped to 8-0. Flaherty was extraordinary on the mound, striking out six batters over five strong innings. He gave up just five hits and no runs. The Rays couldn't muster any offense all night. Their best hittersâYandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda, Junior Camineroâall went quiet. When Enmanuel De Jesus came in for relief, he threw four more strikeouts with zero runs allowed. Detroit walked away with a shutout victory, 8-0. The Tigers improved to 25-38 on the season. Tampa Bay fell to 36-23. One night after a wild shootout, Detroit's pitchers and bats simply dominated.
