The Royals and White Sox Square Off in Chicago
The Kansas City Royals traveled to Chicago to face the White Sox on Wednesday, May 13. Seth Lugo took the mound for Kansas City, bringing his strong pitching to battle Noah Schultz for the home team. Both teams were hungry for a win after their previous matchup. The Royals' pitching staff, led by closer Carlos Estévez when healthy, gives them a chance in close games. However, the White Sox were riding a four-game winning streak and ready to keep things rolling at home. This promised to be an exciting matchup between two determined teams. When the final out was recorded, the White Sox pulled out a thrilling 6-5 victory, escaping with the win in a back-and-forth battle.
Early Sox Scoring and the Back-and-Forth Battle
The White Sox struck first with quick offense in the second inning. Peters doubled to right field with an impressive exit velocity of 106 miles per hour, traveling 285 feet and scoring Kelenic easily. On the very next play, Peters scored on an error by Royals first baseman Pasquantino, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. The Sox added another run in the third inning when Meidroth hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Vargas home. Kansas City refused to quit, though. Loftin answered with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, scoring Garcia and cutting the deficit. Then Pasquantino singled to center, driving in both Witt Jr. and Thomas. The game was tied 3-3, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
Late-Inning Drama and the White Sox Victory
The fifth inning saw the White Sox pull ahead again when Kelenic doubled to right, scoring both Benintendi and Montgomery for a 5-3 lead. Kansas City's offense went quiet for a few innings, allowing Chicago to extend their advantage. In the seventh, Montgomery launched a massive home run 399 feet to right field, making it 6-3 and seemingly putting the game away. But wait—the Royals had one more moment of magic left. In the ninth inning, with two outs, Witt Jr. crushed a towering home run 405 feet to left center, scoring Jensen as well and cutting the deficit to just one run at 6-5. Unfortunately for Kansas City, it wasn't quite enough to complete the comeback. The White Sox held on for the victory, improving to 21-21 on the season.
