Angels Struggle Early, Tigers Strike First
The Angels came to Detroit riding a big win. They'd crushed the Tigers 10-6 the night before and wanted to keep rolling. But the Tigers had different plans at Comerica Park. Right away, Detroit's bats came alive. In the first inning, Dillon Dingler ripped a single to center field. That hit scored Colt Keith, and suddenly the Tigers led 1-0. The Angels couldn't answer back. Then in the second inning, Spencer Torkelson stepped up to face Jose Soriano. The pitcher fired a 98-mile-per-hour fastball right down the middle. Torkelson's eyes lit up. He crushes it—the ball launches over the left field wall for a solo home run. Detroit now led 2-0, and the game was already slipping away from Los Angeles.
Detroit Adds On While Angels Go Quiet
The Angels had nothing for Detroit's pitchers. Mike Trout walked twice and struck out once, but he couldn't get anything going. Neither could the rest of the lineup. No Angel put the ball in play for a hit until way later in the game. Meanwhile, the Tigers kept finding ways to score. In the fifth inning, Riley Greene singled to right field. That hit brought in Kevin McGonigle and sent Greene racing to second base on a throwing error by Jo Adell. The Tigers were in complete control now. In the seventh inning, things got worse for the Angels. A passed ball got away from catcher Logan O'Hoppe. McGonigle scored on the play, and Dingler moved to third. Detroit now led 4-0, and Los Angeles was running out of time to mount any comeback.
Tigers Finish Strong, Angeles Fall Short in Defeat
The final score told the whole story: Detroit 4, Los Angeles 0. The Angels never found their rhythm at the plate. Jose Soriano took the loss after pitching five innings and giving up three runs. The Tigers' pitching was crisp all night. Casey Mize was fantastic in his four innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. Relief pitchers Drew Anderson, Kyle Finnegan, Kenley Jansen, and Brenan Hanifee kept the Angels completely silent. With this win, Detroit moved to 22-34 on the season and snapped a rough stretch. The loss drops Los Angeles to 21-35. After winning big yesterday, the Angels came out flat and couldn't recover. The Tigers showed you what happens when your pitchers throw strikes and your hitters stay locked in. Tomorrow they do it all over again.
