Cardinals Dominate Dodgers Early in St. Louis
The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, May 2, at their home stadium. The Dodgers came into the game riding a four-game losing streak after dropping a close 3-2 contest to the Marlins the previous day. Meanwhile, the Cardinals were riding high on a six-game winning streak following their explosive 10-run victory over the Pirates. However, the Dodgers' powerful pitching staff, led by Emmet Sheehan, hoped to shut down St. Louis's hot offense. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, the Cardinals' bats came alive immediately. St. Louis struck first in the bottom of the first inning when a balk allowed Herrera to score. Gorman then crushed a towering home run 388 feet to right field, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Because of the Cardinals' early offensive explosion, they built a 3-0 lead before the Dodgers could even get settled.
Dodgers Fight Back but Cardinals Pull Away
After falling behind 3-0, the Dodgers managed to score one run in the second inning when Muncy doubled to center field, driving in Pages. The Dodgers' deficit remained at two runs, though, as the Cardinals added another solo home run in the third inning. Burleson's blast traveled 390 feet to right field off a slider, pushing St. Louis's lead to 4-1. The Dodgers didn't quit, though. In the sixth inning, they scored another run when Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Freeman to score. Still trailing 4-2, Los Angeles desperately needed to cut into the deficit. Unfortunately, the Cardinals' pitching held strong throughout the middle innings. Matthew Liberatore, St. Louis's starting pitcher, kept the Dodgers' powerful lineup off balance. Despite their reputation as one of baseball's best offenses, the Dodgers couldn't generate enough scoring opportunities when they mattered most.
Cardinals Explode in Seventh Inning to Win Big
Everything changed in the seventh inning when the Cardinals' offense erupted. Walker crushed a double to left field that should have been routine, but a fielding error by the Dodgers' left fielder T. Hernández allowed the play to become even more costly. Herrera scored on the play, and incredibly, Burleson also scored as Walker advanced safely to third base. Church then grounded into a fielder's choice, sending Walker home for another run. In just one chaotic inning, St. Louis added four runs, ballooning their lead to 7-2. The Dodgers managed to keep the score at 2-7 for the remainder of the game. When the final out was recorded, the Cardinals had dominated with a convincing 7-2 victory. This win extended their winning streak to seven games, proving their young arms and exciting lineup could compete with anyone. The loss dropped Los Angeles's record to 20-14 as they prepared to fight back in upcoming games.
