Brewers Dominate First Inning With Early Power Display
The Milwaukee Brewers came to St. Louis ready to play on May 6, and boy, did they make an impression right away. In the very first inning, they scored four runs against Cardinals starter Andre Pallante, jumping ahead before the home team could even blink. Joey Vaughn absolutely crushed a three-run homer to left-center field, sending the ball flying 403 feet into the air with incredible power. That blast came after Sal Burleson singled to left, scoring Brent Turang. The Brewers' bats were absolutely on fire from the opening pitch. This explosive start set the tone for the entire game and put tremendous pressure on St. Louis's young pitching staff right from the beginning.
Milwaukee Adds Another Run, Cardinals Struggle to Score
The Brewers kept their momentum going through the middle innings. In the fifth inning, Milwaukee added one more run when Ortiz scored on a wild pitch thrown by Cardinals starter Andre Pallante. The pitch got away from Pallante, allowing the runners to advance and the Brewers to extend their lead to five runs without even getting a hit. Meanwhile, St. Louis's offense couldn't find its rhythm against Milwaukee's pitching. The Cardinals managed only four hits through eight innings while the Brewers were pounding the ball with consistency and power. By the time the game reached the eighth inning, Milwaukee held a commanding five-to-nothing lead. The young Cardinals pitchers were struggling to settle down.
Final Innings Bring Minor Cardinals Scoring, Brewers Win Decisively
Milwaukee's lead held strong through most of the game, although the Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Burleson singled to right, scoring one run for St. Louis. Then in the ninth, the Cardinals scored another run when Nolan Gorman reached base on an error by Brewers shortstop Ortiz. However, the Brewers answered right back in the ninth inning when Jaison Chourio doubled to right field, scoring Frelick and making the final score six to two. Milwaukee's pitching and dominant early offense carried them to victory, improving their record to nineteen wins and sixteen losses. The Brewers showed why their young rotation could be an important strength for the team moving forward.
