Brewers and Nationals Face Off in Washington
The Milwaukee Brewers traveled to Washington to take on the Nationals on Sunday, May 3. Milwaukee came into the game riding momentum after a big 4-1 win the day before. The Brewers' young pitching staff, led by exciting arms like Jacob Misiorowski, wanted to keep proving themselves strong. However, starter Logan Henderson took the mound for Milwaukee this game. Washington's pitcher PJ Poulin started for the Nationals, a young team still building their roster. Both squads knew the importance of pitching in this matchup. Neither team scored in the first four innings, making this a tight, defensive battle early on. The game stayed scoreless heading into the fifth inning, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
Fifth Inning Explosion Changes the Game
Everything changed in the fifth inning when both teams finally broke through. Ortiz stepped up for the Brewers and smashed a sacrifice fly to center field, hitting the ball hard at 103 miles per hour. That soaring shot cleared 382 feet and brought Lockridge home, giving Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. But Washington answered back immediately. Nuñez lined a single to center, scoring Abrams to tie the game at 1-1. Then Tena ripped a triple to center field with incredible power, sending the ball 373 feet and bringing Nuñez across the plate. The Nationals suddenly led 2-1 after one wild inning. The momentum had shifted completely, and Washington's young hitters showed their strength against Milwaukee's pitchers.
Late Drama as Nationals Hold On to Win
Washington added another run in the seventh inning when Nuñez singled to left field, scoring Abrams for a 3-1 lead. The Nationals now had some breathing room. Milwaukee fought back in the ninth inning when Mitchell grounded out to second base, and that groundout allowed Perkins to score. The final tally showed Washington winning 3-2 in a close contest. This victory gave the Nationals their first win in the series and improved their record to 16-19. The Brewers fell to 18-15 despite the loss. Both teams showed they had young talent capable of competing at baseball's highest level. The pitching matchups had been tight throughout, with both rosters featuring promising young arms developing their skills.
