Twins Travel to Phoenix, Diamondbacks Strike Early
The Minnesota Twins rolled into Chase Field in Phoenix sitting at 36-41 and hoping to bounce back after losing the night before. Arizona's Diamondbacks stood at 39-36 and were riding a two-game winning streak. The home team was hungry. The visiting Twins needed to find their rhythm. This game would tell a story of momentum swings and big moments. Early on, Arizona looked unstoppable. The Diamondbacks jumped ahead and kept pushing. Minnesota fought back with power shots of their own. Home runs flew. Runners scored. By game's end, Arizona won 9-5 in a back-and-forth battle where both teams showed they could hit. The Twins couldn't quite finish the job, leaving Chase Field with another loss on their road trip.
Victor Caratini launched the first blow for Minnesota in the second inning. The veteran catcher crushed a 93-mile-per-hour cutter over the wall to right-center field. The ball traveled 430 feet. One swing gave the Twins an early 1-0 lead. They were in this game.
Arizona Explodes in Fifth Inning, Diamonds Shine
The Diamondbacks answered back in the third inning when Corbin Carroll singled to left field, scoring a runner and tying the game at 1-1. Arizona was waking up. Then things got wild in the fifth. With runners in scoring position, a fielding error by Brooks Lee at third base let Geraldo Perdomo score. Then Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made contact and hit into a fielder's choice that sent another run across. Ildemaro Vargas stepped up next and ripped a single to left. Two more runs scored on that hit. Suddenly it was 5-1 Arizona. The Diamondbacks were taking over. Then Ketel Marte came up in the sixth and lifted a home run to left field, 375 feet deep. That made it 6-1. Arizona's bats were absolutely rolling. Minnesota had to do something fast.
Corbin Carroll was the star early. His speed and aggressive baserunning kept the Diamondbacks moving. Marte's power reminded everyone why he was an All-Star.
Bell and Lewis Go Yard, Carroll's Triple Ends It
The Twins weren't done yet. In the eighth inning, Josh Bell stepped in against Kevin Ginkel and crushed a 95-mile-per-hour fastball into center field. The ball soared 435 feet. One swing made it 6-4. Then Royce Lewis came right up and did the same thing. Another fastball. Another center field blast. 427 feet. Now it was 6-5. Minnesota had clawed back. The crowd at Chase Field was on edge. But Arizona's Corbin Carroll had the final say. The speedy outfielder came up in the eighth and tripled to right field, a line drive that raced all the way to the corner. Three runs scored on that triple. Perdomo, Troy, and Smith all came home. The final score was 9-5 Diamondbacks. Arizona held on. The Twins' comeback fell just short. Minnesota slipped to 36-42. Arizona improved to 40-36, staying in the hunt.
