Mets Face Cubs in Sunday Showdown
The New York Mets traveled to Chicago on Sunday, April 19, to face the Cubs at Wrigley Field. This matchup was crucial for both teams with very different seasons so far. The Cubs came in hot, winning five straight games and sitting at 12-9. Meanwhile, the Mets were struggling badly, losing eleven games in a row with a record of just 7-15. The Cubs had beaten the Mets 4-2 the day before, so New York was hungry for revenge. Both teams sent solid starters to the mound: Tobias Myers for the Mets and Javier Assad for the Cubs. The pitching looked sharp early, as neither team scored in the first four innings. You could feel the tension building as these two National League teams battled it out on a spring afternoon in Illinois.
Melendez Breaks Through with Powerful Shot
After four scoreless innings, the Mets finally broke through in the top of the fifth. Melendez stepped up to the plate with the count at 3-2 and connected on a 4-seam fastball thrown at 91 miles per hour. The ball exploded off his bat with tremendous force, traveling 387 feet into right-center field. The exit velocity clocked in at an impressive 100 miles per hour, launched at a perfect 35-degree angle. As the ball soared over the wall, the Mets bench erupted with energy. New York took a 1-0 lead, finally putting some runs on the board against Assad and the Cubs pitchers. This solo home run gave the struggling Mets a spark of hope that they might turn their losing streak around. The game stayed tight, but Melendez's powerful swing gave New York something to build on.
Cubs Rally Late for Extra-Inning Victory
The Mets held onto their 1-0 lead through six innings, but the Cubs fought back. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Conforto doubled to right field, and Kingery scored easily. A 4-seam fastball at 94 miles per hour resulted in that hard-hit double that traveled 273 feet with an exit velocity of 95 miles per hour. The game was tied 1-1, heading to extra innings. Both teams kept battling, but neither could break through until the tenth inning. That's when Hoerner came through with a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Crow-Armstrong to score from third base. The Cubs pulled out a 2-1 victory in a thrilling extra-inning contest. Despite the loss, the Mets showed resilience by keeping the game close against a hot Cubs team.
