Mets and Rockies Face Off at Coors Field
The New York Mets traveled to Colorado to face the Rockies on Thursday, May 7. Christian Scott took the mound for the Mets while José Quintana started for the home team. This matchup mattered because both squads were working to turn their seasons around. The Mets had won their previous game at Coors Field, 10-5, with strong pitching leading the way. However, this contest would tell a different story. The Rockies were hungry to bounce back after that loss. Although the Mets struck early with scoring in the second inning, Colorado refused to quit. The final score showed the Rockies claiming victory, 6-2, in a game played in front of their home crowd. This win improved Colorado's record and gave them momentum heading into the next matchup.
Early Lead and Rockies' Comeback Effort
Things started well for the Mets when they took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Ibåñez delivered first with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring a runner from second base. The contact looked solid, traveling 317 feet with good lift. Right after that, Taylor singled to left, and Semien raced home to make it 2-0. The Mets' bats looked dangerous early on. Nevertheless, Colorado's pitchers adjusted and kept the Mets off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. The Rockies began scratching out runs in the fourth inning when Castro singled to right, scoring Freeman. Then in the sixth, McCarthy doubled to center, bringing in Rumfield to tie the game at 2-2. Colorado was clearly building something special.
Jake McCarthy's Grand Slam Seals Rockies Victory
The game changed dramatically in the eighth inning when Jake McCarthy stepped up to the plate. With runners on first, second, and third, McCarthy faced a fastball and connected perfectly. The ball exploded off his bat with tremendous exit velocity of 107 miles per hour. It soared 448 feet over the right field wallâa grand slam! The crowd erupted as Doyle, Tovar, and Castro all crossed home plate. That single swing gave Colorado a 6-2 lead they would not relinquish. McCarthy's power display showcased the Rockies' ability to strike when it mattered most. The Mets couldn't answer back in their final at-bat, and Colorado celebrated their comeback win. This victory showed Colorado's resilience and kept their playoff hopes alive in early May.
