Mets Strike Early Against the Nationals
The Mets rolled into Nationals Park looking to keep their winning streak alive. After losing 8-4 the night before, New York needed to bounce back fast. Washington stood in their way with a 25-26 record, hungry to turn things around after dropping yesterday's game. David Peterson took the mound for the Mets, ready to pitch for the Nationals' opponent. In the third inning, Bo Bichette stepped up and delivered the first blow. His bat cracked through the air and the ball rocketed into center field. Melendez raced home, then Torrens sprinted across the plate right behind him. Just like that, the Mets led 2-0. The Nationals had no answer yet. Peterson was throwing strikes and keeping Washington's hitters completely off balance early on.
Nationals Cut Into the Mets' Lead
The Nationals refused to sit still. In the fifth inning, they finally got on the board. Andres Chaparro stepped up to the plate with pressure on his shoulders. He made contact and watched the ball bounce toward third base. As the play unfolded, Keibert Ruiz sprinted home from third, scoring the Nationals' first run. James Wood, who'd been waiting on base, moved to third as the inning continued. Washington had clawed back to make it 2-1. Suddenly, the game felt tight. The Mets' lead was still there, but only by one run now. Peterson and his teammates knew they couldn't relax. The Nationals were dangerous and this game had plenty of baseball left to play. Every pitch mattered now.
Mets Hold On for a Tough Road Victory
The rest of the game became a battle of pitchers and defense. Peterson completed five strong innings, striking out three batters and giving up just one run. Cade Cavalli pitched seven innings for Washington, racking up nine strikeouts but taking the loss. The Mets brought in their bullpen stars one by one. Huascar Brazoban, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and closer Devin Williams all came in to slam the door shut. Nobody broke through. No more runs scored after the fifth inning. When the final out came, the Mets had won 2-1. It was a grind, not a blowout. New York moved to 23-28 with this road victory. The Nationals fell to 25-27. For the Mets, this win proved they could pitch and win tight games. Francisco Lindor's absence from shortstop didn't stop them. They did it their way.
