Pirates Strike First, Rangers Fight Back
On Thursday, April 23, the Pittsburgh Pirates visited the Texas Rangers for an exciting matchup at Globe Life Field. The Pirates came in hoping to bounce back after a tough loss to Texas the previous game. Although the Rangers had won their last game, both teams were looking to stay competitive in this crucial week of baseball.
Pittsburgh got off to a fantastic start when Ozuna singled to left field in the first inning, scoring Reynolds and giving the Pirates an early one-run lead. However, the Rangers answered back powerfully in the second inning. Jung hit a massive home run over the right field wall, blasting the ball 344 feet and scoring Pederson along the way. Suddenly Texas led 2-1, and the momentum had shifted toward the home team on a spring evening in Arlington.
Pirates Rally Hard in the Fifth Inning
The game stayed tight through innings three and four, with neither team able to break through. Then the Pirates struck with authority in the fifth inning, which turned out to be their best moment of the game. With runners already in scoring position, Lowe singled to left field, and Horwitz raced home to tie the game at 2-2.
But Pittsburgh wasn't finished yet. Reynolds stepped up to the plate and singled to right field, which led to complete chaos on the basepaths. Davis scored easily on the single, and when the Rangers' right fielder Nimmo made a throwing error, Lowe raced home as well. Suddenly the Pirates had jumped ahead 4-2, and they controlled the game thanks to their aggressive baserunning and clutch hitting during that critical fifth-inning explosion.
Rangers Rally Late, Pirates Hold On for Victory
The Rangers fought back in the eighth inning when Burger singled to center field, scoring both McCutchen and Nimmo to make it 4-4. The game was tied heading into the ninth inning, and everything was on the line. The Pirates came through with dramatic late-inning power, starting with a fielder's choice that allowed Gonzales to score. Then Cruz stepped up and crushed a towering home run to right field, blasting the ball 422 feet with an incredible 117 mph exit velocity. The three-run shot gave Pittsburgh an 8-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish. When the final out was recorded, the Pirates celebrated their hard-fought 8-4 victory over Texas, improving their record to 14-11 while Texas fell to 13-12.
