Pirates Strike First, But Jays Take Control
The Pirates and Blue Jays squared off at Toronto's stadium on Friday night. Pittsburgh came in hungry after losing their last game. Brandon Lowe and Nick Gonzales got things rolling early for the visitors. In the first inning, Spencer Horwitz stepped up with two outs and smacked a sacrifice fly to center field. Lowe sprinted home, and the Pirates led 1-0. But Toronto was ready to answer back. In the third inning, Bubba Chandler faced Daulton Varsho and watched a ground ball get loose. A throwing error by Horwitz at first let George Springer score on the play. The game was tied. Then Yohendrick Pinango ripped a double down the right field line. Guerrero Jr. and Varsho both raced home. Just like that, Toronto grabbed a 3-1 lead. The Jays were in control.
Chandler Struggles as Blue Jays Build the Lead
Bubba Chandler took the mound for Pittsburgh and had a rough night. The young pitcher threw five innings but gave up three runs. He struck out eleven batters, showing real power on the mound, but the damage was done. Kevin Gausman pitched for Toronto and looked sharp on the bump. The Blue Jays' ace threw six and two-thirds innings of solid baseball. He scattered six hits and struck out eight Pirates batters. The score stayed 3-1 going into the eighth inning. That's when things got wild. The Pirates managed to scratch out one more run when Bryan Reynolds brought home Brandon Lowe on a ground out. But Toronto's relief pitchers slammed the door. The Jays refused to let Pittsburgh get any closer to catching up.
Blue Jays Close Out Victory With Late Barrage
The eighth inning was the final blow for Pittsburgh. Dennis Santana came in to pitch for the Pirates and things fell apart fast. Jesus Sanchez doubled down the right field line, and Ernie Clement raced home. The score jumped to 4-2. Then George Springer stepped in and delivered the knockout punch. He crushed a ground rule double, and two more Blue Jays runners scored. Toronto now led 6-2, and that was all she wrote. Louis Varland came in and shut the door for Toronto in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays picked up their third straight win with a final score of 6-2. Pittsburgh dropped to 26-25 on the season. Toronto improved to 24-27 but showed real signs of life with three wins in a row. The Jays' bats came alive when it mattered most.
