Rockies Strike First in Home Opener
The Giants came to Denver looking to bounce back after losing 8-6 the night before. You could feel the tension at Coors Field as the Colorado Rockies took their turn at bat in the first inning. Adrian Houser took the mound for San Francisco, but the Rockies jumped on him right away. Willi Castro slapped a single up the middle, and Jake McCarthy raced home. That wasn't allâSterlin Thompson got hit by a pitch, and Hunter Goodman scored the second run. Just like that, Colorado led 2-0 before the Giants could even step into the box. The Rockies were hungry, and Houser was already struggling to find his rhythm against this Denver lineup.
McCarthy Dominates, Rockies Add More Runs
Colorado's lineup kept attacking in the fourth inning. Jake McCarthy came up swinging and connected on a pitch that rocketed deep to right-center field. The ball soared 427 feetâa massive blast that sent McCarthy flying around the bases with Edouard Julien right behind him. The Rockies now led 4-0. But McCarthy wasn't done yet. In the fifth inning, he singled to left and drove in another run. The guy was on fire. Later, in the seventh, McCarthy ripped another single and scored Freeman. You could see the confidence building in the Colorado lineup. Every swing looked dangerous. By the time Kyle Karros launched a 396-foot homer to right-center, the score had climbed to 8-0.
Giants Rally Late But Fall Short 3-8
San Francisco finally woke up in the eighth inning. Drew Gilbert stepped in and launched a bomb to right-center fieldâ421 feet of pure power. Bryce Eldridge scored on the blast, cutting the deficit to 2-8. In the ninth inning, Matt Chapman singled to left, and Jung Hoo Lee raced home to make it 3-8. It was too little too late, though. Ryan Feltner threw six strong innings for Colorado, allowing no runs and just four hits. The Giants' pitching staff couldn't survive the early barrage. San Francisco fell to 22-36 while Colorado improved to 22-37. The Rockies grabbed their second straight win and kept themselves afloat in a tight race.
Did the Giants score any runs in the first inning?
