Nationals Strike First Behind Griffin's Gem
The Washington Nationals came to Atlanta looking to build on a huge win the night before. They'd shut out the Braves 2-0 on Saturday, and now the pressure was on. The Braves were still the better team overall at 36-18, but the Nationals had momentum at 27-27. Foster Griffin took the mound and looked absolutely untouchable. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six batters. The Braves couldn't get anything going early. Meanwhile, Washington's offense came alive in the fifth inning. Nasim Nunez ripped a single to right field on an 85 mph cutter, and Daylen Lile came racing home. The score was 1-0 Nationals. Young speed and smart baserunning put pressure on Atlanta from the opening pitch.
Washington Extends Lead, Atlanta Struggles to Catch Up
The Nationals kept rolling in the eighth inning. Luis Garcia Jr. stepped up against Reynaldo Lopez and smacked a single to right on an 83 mph slider. James Wood came sprinting home, and Washington made it 2-0. That was all the offense they needed. The Braves were frustrated. Their star lineupâMatt Olson, Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies, Ronald Acuña Jr.âcouldn't break through. Albies went 3-for-4, one of the few bright spots, but it wasn't enough. The Atlanta pitching struggled too. Martin Perez gave up a run in 5.2 innings. Lopez and the bullpen just couldn't keep Washington's bats quiet. The Nationals' defense was sharp, and Foster Griffin's dominance set the tone early.
Braves Score Late But Can't Complete the Comeback
Atlanta finally got on the board in the ninth inning. Eli White hit a ball in play on an 85 mph slider from Richard Lovelady. A fielding error by second baseman Nasim Nunez allowed Ozzie Albies to score. The final was 2-1, Nationals. Washington improved to 27-27 with their second straight win and now sat at 2-0 on the road trip. Atlanta dropped to 36-19 and fell to 17-11 at home. The Braves' loss streak hit two games. It was a tough day for the favorites. Foster Griffin's six-inning masterpiece made the difference. The Nationals' pitching depth shined bright. Washington's young starsâJames Wood, Jacob Young, and Garcia Jr.âdelivered in the clutch moments. Atlanta's lineup never found its rhythm against solid Nationals pitching.
