Washington's Hot Start: Early Fireworks at the Plate
The Washington Nationals came into Friday night riding high after beating the Twins 7-5 on Thursday. Now they faced the Miami Marlins at home, and Foster Griffin took the mound for the young pitching staff. Right away, the Nationals showed why they'd won three straight games. Abrams singled sharply to center field, and Mead raced home for the first run. The excitement was just beginning. Young stepped up next and crushed a 4-seam fastball 403 feet into left field, a towering home run that made the crowd roar. Abrams scored behind him, and just like that, Washington led 3-0. The Nationals' bats were absolutely on fire in that opening inning, proving their young team had serious talent and resilience moving forward.
Marlins Fight Back with Early Scoring
Miami wasn't about to roll over after falling behind three runs. Edwards stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and connected on a 4-seam fastball, launching it 400 feet over left-center field for a solo home run. The ball soared high and far, and Miami was on the board at 3-1. The Marlins didn't stop there. A few batters later, Stowers put the ball in play, and a throwing error by Mead allowed Lopez to score from second base. Suddenly, Washington's three-run advantage didn't feel so comfortable anymore. Miami had cut the deficit to just one run after only two scoring plays in the bottom of the first. The momentum had shifted dramatically, and Foster Griffin faced real pressure.
Washington Holds On for Victory Against Miami
After that wild first inning, the game settled down considerably. Foster Griffin regrouped and pitched strong baseball for the Nationals, keeping the Marlins off the board through the remaining innings. Miami's bats went quiet after their aggressive bottom of the first, unable to generate more scoring chances. The defense tightened up, and no more runs came across the plate for either team. Washington's early three-run advantage held up, giving the Nationals a 3-2 victory. This win extended their winning streak to three games and improved their record to 19-20. For Miami, the loss dropped them to 17-22, and they couldn't build on their momentum from Thursday's win over the Orioles. The young Nationals showed they could compete when their bats got hot early and their pitchers stayed calm under pressure.
