NBA All-Star Recap: New Format, New Life
The 2026 NBA All Star Game brought a brand new format and a brand new level of energy. Instead of one long game, the league used a three team round robin tournament. The teams were Team World, USA Stripes, and USA Stars. Team World featured international stars like Victor Wembenyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The USA Stripes team was made up of veteran American stars like LeBron James and Kevin Durant. The USA Stars team highlighted the league’s young American talent like Cade Cunningham and Anthony Edwards.
Each game lasted just 12 minutes. The two best teams moved on to a short championship game. Because the games were shorter, every possession mattered. Players could not take plays off. The faster pace made the action feel intense from start to finish.
Kawhi Lifts the Veterans
In one of the most exciting games of the night, USA Stripes faced Victor Wembenyama and Team World. Kawhi Leonard led the way for the veterans. He scored 31 points in only 12 minutes. He made six three point shots and barely missed all night.
With the score close in the final seconds, Leonard calmly hit a clutch three pointer to secure a 48 to 45 win over Team World. His performance sent the veterans into the championship game and reminded fans why he is one of the league’s most respected stars.
Young Stars Take Control
In the championship game, the young guards of USA Stars set the tone early. Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey pushed the ball up the court at full speed. They attacked the rim and knocked down open shots. USA Stars jumped out to a 12 to 1 lead and never looked back. Later, Anthony Edwards was named All-Star MVP.
Many fans said this was the most competitive All Star Game in years. The new format created urgency and effort. It gave hope that the All Star Game can be exciting again.
