Rockets Visit Pelicans With Playoff Stakes High
The Houston Rockets bring their 44-29 record into New Orleans on Sunday, sitting sixth in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Pelicans at 25-50 are looking to build momentum late in a rough season. Although these teams are heading in different directions, this matchup still has real stakes — especially for Houston, which needs every win to protect its playoff position.
Durant and Şengün Power Houston's Offense
Kevin Durant, at 37 years old, averages about 25 points per game and remains Houston's go-to scorer in clutch moments. His smooth shot-making in isolation is nearly impossible to guard. Alperen Şengün adds about 23 points, over nine rebounds, and nearly seven assists per game. Because he controls the half-court offense with elite passing and post scoring, Şengün has earned legitimate All-Star recognition this season.
New Orleans Faces Injuries, But Zion Provides Hope
New Orleans enters Sunday with serious injury uncertainty. Trey Murphy III, who averages about 21 points per game, is questionable with a right ankle sprain. Dejounte Murray is also questionable after sitting out for injury management. If both stars play, the Pelicans become much more competitive. Zion Williamson, however, has been a rare bright spot — playing more games than he has in several recent seasons while averaging almost 22 points.
Amen Thompson's Defense Could Be the Difference
Amen Thompson brings two-way versatility that few players in the league can match. He averages about 18 points, over seven rebounds, and five assists while guarding multiple positions at an elite level. Although Fred VanVleet is out for Houston, Thompson can handle extra ball-handling responsibilities. If he dominates defensively against New Orleans' wings, the Rockets could control this game from start to finish and stay firmly in playoff position.
