Pistons Pull Away Behind Cunningham's Control
Detroit's dominance started early and never let up. The Pistons jumped out to a commanding 37-21 lead by the end of the first quarter, and Cleveland couldn't catch up. Cade Cunningham orchestrated everything from the point forward position, controlling possessions with patience and vision. His 23 points and 7 assists kept Detroit's offense humming throughout the night. By halftime, Detroit led 59-46, and the Cavaliers faced a serious uphill battle. The Pistons' length and speed on defense suffocated Cleveland's attempts to find rhythm. Duncan Robinson added 19 points with incredible shooting efficiency, stretching the floor and keeping defenders honest from deep. Tobias Harris contributed 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, dominating the glass. Detroit's two-way superiority was on full display, and Cleveland needed answers.
Harden Powers Late Comeback, Still Short
James Harden led a furious fourth-quarter comeback for Cleveland, refusing to let Detroit run away with the game. The former MVP scored 22 points and dished 7 assists while attacking the rim and creating for teammates. Harden's aggressive play brought Cleveland within striking distance multiple times down the stretch. With about five minutes left, he tied the game at 93-93 with a clutch three-pointer and free throws. Donovan Mitchell added 23 points and stayed aggressive despite shooting just 47.4 percent from the field. Max Strus provided scoring punch off the bench with 19 points on excellent shooting. However, Detroit's depth proved too much to overcome. Jalen Duren's three consecutive dunks in the final minutes sealed the victory. The Cavaliers showed resilience, but fell 111-101.
Detroit's Defense and Depth Prove Decisive
What separated the Pistons from the Cavaliers wasn't just scoring, but suffocating defense and role-player depth. Ausar Thompson's elite athleticism on the wing held Cleveland's guards in check with quick feet and long arms. His 11 points and 8 rebounds showed his two-way impact. Daniss Jenkins emerged as a key contributor off the bench, scoring 12 points and grabbing 7 rebounds while adding 4 steals. Isaiah Stewart provided toughness and versatility in the frontcourt, switching on multiple positions. This well-rounded roster allowed Detroit to execute Game 1 with precision. Cleveland, missing Sam Merrill due to a left hamstring injury, couldn't get enough perimeter support around Mitchell and Harden. The Pistons' balanced attack and defensive pressure broke down Cleveland's rhythm early. Detroit's 60-22 record and homecourt advantage will be tough to overcome.
