Paolo Banchero rose like a superhero when the Orlando Magic needed him most. With Franz Wagner sitting out injured, Banchero took over on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. He scored 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Magic escaped with a 110-109 victory.
A Hero Emerges
The Lakers jumped out to an early 33-25 lead after the first quarter. Their home crowd roared as LeBron James and Luka Doncic pushed the pace. But Banchero would not let his team quit. He attacked the basket like a charging bull. His drives to the rim were unstoppable. Every time the Lakers tried to pull away, Banchero answered back.
Down to the Wire
The game stayed close through all four quarters. By halftime, the Lakers led 56-53. After three quarters, LA was up 80-79. The Magic trailed nearly the entire game but kept fighting. Banchero shot over 54 percent from the floor. His smooth jump shots and powerful dunks kept Orlando alive.
Wendell Carter Jr. was a beast on the boards. He scored 20 points and ripped down 12 rebounds. His big body clogged the paint like a brick wall. Desmond Bane added 22 points and six assists to help the Magic's attack.
Lakers Come Up Short
LeBron James poured in 21 points on excellent shooting. Luka Doncic controlled the game with 22 points and 15 assists. He fired passes like laser beams to his teammates. Deandre Ayton dominated inside with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Austin Reaves chipped in 18 points.
But it wasn't enough. The Magic made the winning plays when it mattered most. Orlando improved to 31-26 on the season. The Lakers fell to 34-23. Sometimes one point is all the difference between winning and losing.
