The Western Conference playoff race is heating up fast. Some teams are battling for the number one seed. Others are fighting just to make the playoffs. Let's break down who's where after Week 16.
The Championship Contenders
Oklahoma City Thunder sits on top at 42-13. The defending champs look unstoppable. They win even without their star players. San Antonio Spurs chase them at 38-16. Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox make this team dangerous. These two squads are battling for the top seed and home court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Denver Nuggets holds third place at 35-20. Nikola Jokic keeps doing Jokic things with triple-doubles. They're not catching Oklahoma City. But they'll get home court in the first round if they hold their spot.
Fighting for Home Court
Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves sit at 33-20 and 34-22. Both teams want that precious home court advantage for round one. Kevin Durant powers Houston's attack. Anthony Edwards leads Minnesota's charge. Every game matters now.
The Lakers are 32-21 but sliding. They've lost two straight games. Luka Doncic and LeBron James need to get healthy fast. Phoenix sits at 32-23 but is missing key players too.
The Play-In Battle
Golden State Warriors at 29-26 are barely hanging on. Without Stephen Curry healthy, they're struggling. The Clippers improved to 27-28 after their big comeback against Houston. Kawhi Leonard is playing like a superhero again. Portland sits at 26-29 and needs to start winning soon.
These three teams are fighting to avoid dropping out completely. Nobody wants to miss the playoffs.
Out of the Race
Memphis, Dallas, Utah, New Orleans, and Sacramento are done. Memphis is 20-33 with Ja Morant injured. Dallas has fallen to 19-34 despite Cooper Flagg's amazing rookie season. The bottom five teams are already thinking about next year.
The playoff picture gets clearer every week. Championship dreams are alive for some. For others, the season is already over.
