Nikola Jokic Injures His Knee, Out at Least 4 Weeks
Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic will miss at least four weeks after hurting his left knee. The injury happened late in the second quarter of a road game against the Miami Heat. Jokic was moving on defense when teammate Spencer Jones accidentally stepped on his foot. His knee bent backward, and he fell to the floor holding his leg. Jokic was helped off the court and went to the locker room. He did not return for the second half.
What Is a Knee Hyperextension?
A knee hyperextension happens when the knee bends too far forward. Knees are meant to bend backward and then straighten, but they are not supposed to go past straight. When that happens, parts inside the knee can get stretched or hurt. Hyperextensions can be painful and scary, but they are sometimes less serious than they look.
What Doctors Found
After the game, Jokic had an MRI. The scan showed a hyperextension in his left knee. The good news is that his ligaments are still okay. That means he did not tear his ACL or another major ligament. Those injuries often end a season. The Nuggets say Jokic will be out at least four weeks and will be checked again after that. Some reports say he could miss up to six or eight weeks if his knee heals slowly.
How the Recovery Works
First, Jokic will rest his knee and work to lower swelling and pain. This usually includes ice, light stretching, and treatment with trainers. Next, he will begin physical therapy to build strength and balance. Later, he will slowly return to basketball moves like running, jumping, and changing direction. The team wants to make sure his knee feels strong before he plays again.
What Damage Can Happen Inside the Knee?
Even if ligaments are not torn, a hyperextension can still cause problems. The cartilage can get bruised, bones can be stressed, and ligaments can be stretched too far. If a player comes back too soon, the knee may still feel sore or stiff. That is why teams are very careful with this type of injury.
What This Means for the Nuggets
Jokic was having another amazing season, close to averaging a triple-double and playing every game so far. Without him, the Denver Nuggets will have a tougher time winning. They are third in the West but only three games ahead of the play-in teams. Jamal Murray and other players like Jonas Valanciunas will need to step up while Jokic recovers.
