Panthers Defeat Buccaneers 23–20 in Sunday Thriller
The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers came into this rare late-season matchup with the same record: 7–7. Both teams are fighting to stay in the NFC playoff race. Tampa Bay finally had its full wide receiver group healthy with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, rookie Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan all on the field together.
But even against that talented offense, Bryce Young and the Panthers made just a few more plays, escaping with a 23–20 win. Carolina moves to 8–7, while Tampa Bay falls to 7–8.
Bryce Young and Panthers start fast
Carolina came out aggressive on the opening drive. Bryce Young worked the short passing game, hitting Rico Dowdle and first-round rookie Tetairoa McMillan to move the ball near midfield. Then the Panthers reached into the bag of tricks, handing the ball to corner Jaycee Horn on a jet sweep for 25 yards down the right sideline.
Dowdle followed with a tough run to the Bucs’ 13, but the drive stalled in the red zone. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald drilled a 27-yard field goal to give Carolina a 3–0 lead.
Tampa answered with the strength of its offense. Bucky Irving ran hard between the tackles, and Baker Mayfield spread the ball to Evans, Godwin, and McMillan. Irving ripped a 12-yard run to the 1-yard line, and Mayfield finished the drive with a short touchdown pass to Evans in the flat. With the extra point, the Bucs led 7–3, and their fully healthy receiver group looked dangerous.
Tetairoa McMillan’s late-half heroics
In the second quarter, Rachaad White sparked Tampa with a 39-yard run, and a penalty on Carolina pushed the ball even further. The Panthers held in the red zone, but Chase McLaughlin hit a 23-yard field goal to make it 10–3.
Carolina answered with another Fitzgerald field goal, then put together the drive of the half in the final minute. Young spread the ball around to Tetairoa McMillan, Dowdle, and Jalen Coker, using all three timeouts perfectly. With 12 seconds left, Young dropped back and fired a deep pass down the left sideline. McMillan beat single coverage and hauled it in for a 22-yard touchdown.
The Panthers went into halftime up 13–10, and their young wideout looked every bit like a true number one.
Bucs lean on depth, Panthers answer back
Tampa opened the third quarter with a long, grinding drive. Irving and White kept hammering away on the ground while Mayfield picked up a key first down with a 23-yard scramble. Near the goal line, the Bucs used motion and extra linemen to confuse the defense, and speed back Sean Tucker bounced outside for a 1-yard touchdown run. Tampa went back on top 17–13.
Young did not panic. He used his legs to escape pressure and hit McMillan and tight end Tommy Tremble on short passes. Chuba Hubbard and Dowdle chipped away on the ground. With 17 seconds left in the third quarter, Young found running back Jalen Sanders on a short left pass for a 6-yard touchdown, giving Carolina a 20–17 lead.
Egbuka’s big play and the final stand
Early in the fourth quarter, Tampa’s full-strength receiver room showed again. Mayfield threw to Jalen McMillan on a short gain, then fired deep over the middle to Egbuka for a 40-yard strike to the Carolina 49. The Panthers’ defense stiffened, but McLaughlin nailed a 50-yard field goal to tie the game at 20–20.
Carolina answered with a patient drive. Young found Coker on a deep ball down the right sideline for 34 yards, then mixed in runs by Dowdle and Hubbard. When the Bucs finally got a stop, Fitzgerald stayed perfect, knocking in a 48-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 23–20 lead with just over two minutes left.
With all their receivers healthy, Tampa still had a chance to steal it and stay above .500. Mayfield hit Evans and tight end Cade Otton on short throws to reach Carolina territory. But with under a minute remaining, he tried to squeeze another pass into Evans over the middle. Instead, Carolina safety Lathan Ransom jumped the route and picked it off at the Carolina 30.
Young took a knee, and the Panthers closed it out. Carolina moves to 8–7 and keeps its playoff hopes alive, while the Bucs fall to 7–8 and are suddenly running out of time, even with their full receiver room finally on the field.
