The New England Patriots hosted the Houston Texans in a high-stakes Divisional Round playoff game. Houston came in riding a nine-game winning streak, but New England’s defense set the tone early and never let up. By the end of the night, the Patriots earned a 28–16 win and a trip to the AFC Championship Game.
First Quarter: Big Plays and Early Turnovers
The Patriots struck first with a strong opening drive. Rookie quarterback Drake Maye moved the ball efficiently and capped it off with a touchdown pass to DeMario Douglas, giving New England a 7–0 lead.
Houston answered with a long drive of its own. C.J. Stroud connected on a big pass to Dalton Schultz to move deep into Patriots territory. The Texans looked ready to score, but penalties stalled the drive, and they had to settle for a field goal to make it 7–3.
Late in the quarter, Stroud tried to force a pass near the goal line and was intercepted. Just before the quarter ended, Maye fumbled, giving the Texans another chance close to the end zone.
Second Quarter: Defense Takes Over
Houston made the most of the turnover to start the second quarter. Stroud found Christian Kirk for a short touchdown, and suddenly the Texans led 10–7.
That lead did not last long. On the very next Houston possession, Stroud threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by the Patriots. Foxborough erupted as New England jumped back in front.
Things only got worse for Houston. Stroud threw another interception later in the quarter, and Maye took advantage by throwing a touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs. The Patriots’ defense continued to swarm Stroud, forcing mistake after mistake.
At halftime, New England held a commanding 21–10 lead.
Third Quarter: Texans Hang Around
Houston showed toughness coming out of the break. The Texans put together two long drives but could only manage field goals. Still, the points mattered and helped keep the game within reach.
The Patriots had chances to pull away but struggled to finish drives. Both defenses made plays, and the score stayed close enough to give Houston some hope heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Patriots Finish the Job
Early in the fourth quarter, Maye delivered the biggest play of the night. He launched a deep pass to Kayshon Boutte for a 32-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 28–16.
From there, New England leaned on its running game and defense. Rhamondre Stevenson churned out tough yards to drain the clock, while the Patriots’ defense continued to pressure Stroud.
Houston tried to mount one last comeback, but sacks, incompletions, and another interception sealed their fate. The Patriots kneeled out the final seconds to lock up the win.
What It Means
The victory sends New England to the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos after another dominant defensive performance. Drake Maye threw three touchdown passes, and the Patriots forced multiple turnovers that decided the game.
For Houston, the loss ends a magical nine-game winning streak. Despite flashes of promise, turnovers proved too costly on the road in one of the toughest playoff environments in football.
