Patriots Soar Past Browns 32-13 Behind Drake Maye's Three-Touchdown Performance
The New England Patriots (5-2) welcomed the Cleveland Browns (2-5) to Foxborough for a crucial Week 8 matchup. The Patriots entered looking to continue their surprising season turnaround under head coach Mike Vrabel, while the Browns hoped to keep their playoff dreams alive despite early struggles.
First Quarter Sets the Stage
The game started with both teams trading scoring drives. New England struck first when Drake Maye led an impressive opening drive, scrambling for 16 yards and finding Rhamondre Stevenson for a key 15-yard pass. However, the drive stalled in the red zone, settling for a 36-yard field goal by kicker Borregales.
Cleveland answered right back with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel showing poise in the pocket. The Browns marched down the field behind a spectacular 31-yard run by wide receiver Malachi Corley, who took an end-around to the Patriots' 18-yard line. Gabriel capped the drive with a beautiful 18-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr., giving Cleveland a 7-3 lead after one quarter.
Second Quarter Momentum Shifts
The second quarter belonged to the Patriots defense and Drake Maye's arm. Cleveland linebacker Schwesinger made a huge play, intercepting Maye's pass intended for Stefon Diggs and returning it to the Patriots' 34-yard line. However, the Browns couldn't capitalize, missing a 47-yard field goal attempt.
Maye bounced back immediately, connecting with tight end Austin Hooper for a spectacular 31-yard gain down the middle. The drive continued with a 21-yard strike to Max Hollins, but the Patriots settled for another field goal after a sack by Browns star pass rusher Myles Garrett.
With time running out in the half, Maye showed his dual-threat ability. He found DeMario Douglas for a magnificent 44-yard bomb, then connected with Kayshon Boutte for 21 yards. The Patriots kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired, leading 9-7 at halftime.
Third Quarter Explosion
The third quarter saw the Patriots take complete control. TreVeyon Henderson broke free for a 27-yard run, setting up Maye's first touchdown pass to Hunter Henry from 7 yards out. New England led 16-7.
Cleveland's struggles continued when Gabriel threw his second interception of the game, this time to Patriots linebacker Spillane who returned it 33 yards to the Browns' 6-yard line. Maye quickly found Stefon Diggs for a 1-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 23-7.
But the Patriots weren't finished. After Gabriel's third interception, Maye scrambled for an amazing 28-yard run, then found Kayshon Boutte for a spectacular 39-yard touchdown bomb. The Patriots led 30-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter Cleanup
Cleveland showed fight in the final quarter, with Gabriel leading a methodical drive. The rookie quarterback found Dylan Sampson multiple times before hitting David Njoku for an 11-yard touchdown pass. However, the Browns failed on their two-point conversion attempt, making the score 30-13.
The Patriots added a safety when Gabriel was called for intentional grounding in his own end zone, sealing the 32-13 victory.
Looking Ahead
This dominant performance moves the Patriots to 6-2, firmly establishing them as legitimate playoff contenders. Drake Maye completed 18 of 24 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns, despite taking six sacks. Kayshon Boutte emerged as a key weapon with 75 receiving yards and a touchdown.
For Cleveland, the loss drops them to 2-6, making their playoff hopes increasingly difficult. Despite Harold Fannin Jr.'s impressive 62 receiving yards and a touchdown, the Browns' three turnovers proved costly.
The Patriots will look to continue their winning ways in their next matchup, while the Browns must regroup quickly to salvage their season.
