Cardinals Beat Panthers 27-22 in Early-Season Showdown
The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers played an exciting game that showed both teams are hopeful for the 2025 season. The Cardinals, led by quarterback Kyler Murray and rising star Marvin Harrison Jr., wanted to keep improving after a good season last year. The Panthers, with second-year quarterback Bryce Young, were feeling optimistic thanks to his strong play in the latter part of 2024 under coach Dave Canales.
First Quarter: Cardinals Strike Early
The game started with a bang when Arizona's defense made a big play. Josh Sweat, a key player for the Cardinals, sacked Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and caused a fumble. Linebacker Collins picked up the ball and scored a touchdown, putting Arizona ahead 7-0 right away.
The Panthers responded quickly, showing their toughness. Young connected with rookie standout Tetairoa McMillan for an impressive 40-yard gain, which showed how well they worked together. This drive ended with a field goal by Fitzgerald, making the score 7-3.
Arizona came back strong, using a smart offensive approach. Kyler Murray completed several passes to tight end Trey McBride, taking advantage of the Panthers' defense. The Cardinals reached the red zone but settled for a field goal by Chad Ryland, extending their lead to 10-3.
Second Quarter: Offensive Fireworks
Both teams found their groove in the second quarter. The Cardinals kept using their top players, with Murray throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Michael Wilson just nine seconds before halftime. This score capped off a great two-minute drill where Murray showed his ability to move and make quick decisions.
The Panthers demonstrated their potential, with Young spreading passes to several receivers. Chuba Hubbard, who became a star late in 2024, helped the offense by running and catching passes, keeping the Panthers' plays exciting and hard to predict.
Third Quarter: Panthers Fight Back
Down 17-3 at halftime, the Panthers came out strong in the third quarter. Young led a great 96-yard touchdown drive that showed how much he has improved under coach Canales. This drive included plays from different players, like veteran Rico Dowdle and tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, before Young threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow.
The Cardinals answered back with a good drive of their own. James Conner scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown, keeping their lead at 24-9. Murray's good passes, especially to Harrison Jr., kept the Panthers' defense guessing.
Fourth Quarter: Thrilling Finish
The last quarter was full of action as both teams made big plays. Young threw his third touchdown pass of the game, finding Hubbard for a 5-yard score, closing the gap to 27-16 after a missed two-point conversion.
With time running out, Young led another strong drive. He connected with Renfrow for a second touchdown, this one a 1-yard pass, making the score 27-22 with less than two minutes to go. This set up a thrilling end to the game.
The Panthers tried an onside kick to get the ball back, but the Cardinals recovered and managed to run out the clock for the win.
Looking Ahead
This victory gives the Cardinals a boost as they build better teamwork between Murray and his talented receivers. The stronger defense, with players like Sweat, proved they can make big plays.
For the Panthers, even though they lost, Young's game (328 passing yards, 3 touchdowns) showed his growth and why they are hopeful for 2025. The connection with McMillan and the skills of players like Hubbard give them a strong base for the future.
Both teams will work on improving as they prepare for their next games in what looks to be an exciting 2025 NFL season.
