Seahawks Roll Past Panthers 27-10 as Charbonnet Powers Championship Push
The Seattle Seahawks entered their Week 17 showdown against the Carolina Panthers with a perfect opportunity to showcase their championship credentials. Seattle came in with a sparkling 12-3 record and the top seed in the NFC already locked up, while Carolina sat at 8-7, desperately needing a victory to keep their surprising playoff dreams alive.
First Quarter: Defense Sets the Tone
Both teams started cautiously in a defensive battle. The Seahawks struck first when Jason Myers connected on a 48-yard field goal after a methodical drive. Sam Darnold found his favorite target Jaxon Smith-Njigba multiple times, including a crucial 13-yard completion to keep the drive alive. The quarter ended with Seattle holding a slim 3-0 advantage.
Second Quarter: Turnovers Change Everything
The second quarter became a game-changer when Carolina's defense forced a fumble from Darnold deep in Seattle territory. The Panthers capitalized immediately, with Rico Dowdle powering through the Seattle defense for key yards before Ryan Fitzgerald nailed a 35-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3.
Seattle tried to respond before halftime, but the Panthers' defense stepped up again. However, Carolina couldn't take advantage of their momentum, and both teams headed to the locker room deadlocked.
Third Quarter: Charbonnet Takes Over
The second half belonged entirely to Seattle's backup running back Zach Charbonnet. After an interception by a Seahawks defender gave Seattle excellent field position, Charbonnet began his dominant performance. The second-year back from UCLA punched in his first touchdown of the season from two yards out, capping off a powerful goal-line stand.
Minutes later, after another Carolina turnover, Charbonnet was at it again. This time, he broke free for a 29-yard run that set up another scoring opportunity. The Seahawks extended their lead when Darnold found a receiver in the end zone for 17 yards, making it 17-3.
Carolina's struggles continued as Bryce Young threw his second interception of the day, completely stalling any offensive momentum the Panthers had built.
Fourth Quarter: Seattle Pulls Away
Young showed his dual-threat ability early in the final quarter, scrambling for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-10. The second-year quarterback's rushing touchdown gave Panthers fans hope for a comeback.
However, Charbonnet had other plans. The versatile back continued his career day, racking up chunk plays and wearing down the Carolina defense. Smith-Njigba remained Darnold's most reliable target, hauling in 9 receptions for 72 yards and consistently moving the chains.
Charbonnet sealed the victory with his second rushing touchdown of the game, finishing with an incredible 110 rushing yards on 18 carries. His breakout performance perfectly complemented Kenneth Walker III, giving Seattle a devastating one-two punch in the backfield.
Looking Ahead
This dominant 27-10 victory improved Seattle to 13-3, extending their winning streak to six games as they head into the playoffs as the NFC's top seed. Charbonnet's emergence as a legitimate weapon gives the Seahawks even more offensive firepower for their championship run.
For Carolina, the loss dropped them to 8-8, officially ending their playoff hopes despite their late-season surge under Young's development. The Panthers showed fight but couldn't overcome Seattle's balanced attack and opportunistic defense.
Seattle will enjoy a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, while Carolina heads into the offseason with plenty of optimism about Young's growth and their young core's potential for 2026.
