Seahawks Survive Field Goal Battle Against Colts 18-16
The Seattle Seahawks entered Sunday night's showdown at 10-3, riding high on their explosive offense and championship dreams. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts arrived at 8-5, desperately fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive after recent struggles. What followed was a defensive slugfest that came down to the final seconds.
First Quarter: Kickers Take Center Stage
Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm early on. The Colts struck first when superstar running back Jonathan Taylor powered his way down the field on multiple carries. Taylor, who entered the game with over 1,559 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns this season, continued his MVP-caliber campaign by grinding out tough yards. Indianapolis capped their opening drive with a 42-yard field goal by Grupe to take a 3-0 lead.
Seattle answered right back with their own methodical drive. Sam Darnold, the quarterback experiencing an amazing career revival, found veteran receiver Cooper Kupp for key completions. The Seahawks couldn't punch it into the end zone but Myers nailed a 47-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3 after one quarter.
Second Quarter: Colts Find the End Zone
The second quarter featured more back-and-forth action as both defenses dominated. Taylor continued his relentless running, pounding the rock between the tackles and wearing down Seattle's defense. The Colts added another field goal to take a 6-3 advantage.
With time running out in the first half, Indianapolis finally broke through for a touchdown. Philip Rivers, the veteran quarterback filling in admirably, connected with Josh Downs in the end zone for an 8-yard scoring strike. The touchdown capped a beautiful drive where Taylor showcased why he's considered the league's best running back, churning out crucial yards when his team needed them most. Indianapolis led 13-3 at halftime.
Seattle managed a late field goal before the break when Darnold found his rhythm, connecting with emerging star Jaxon Smith-Njigba for key gains. The Seahawks trailed 13-6 entering the locker room.
Third Quarter: Seahawks Fight Back
Seattle came out firing in the third quarter. Darnold, who has been nothing short of spectacular this season, began finding his favorite targets consistently. He connected with speedster Rashid Shaheed for a spectacular 27-yard gain that had the crowd buzzing.
The Seahawks methodically moved down the field, with Darnold spreading the ball around to multiple receivers. However, they had to settle for another Myers field goal, cutting the deficit to 13-9. Indianapolis couldn't generate much offense against Seattle's improved defense, and the quarter ended with the Seahawks trailing by four points.
Fourth Quarter: Drama Until the End
The final quarter turned into a field goal festival. Seattle tied the game 13-13 early in the fourth when Myers connected from 32 yards out. The Seahawks defense was playing lights-out football, making life difficult for Taylor and the Colts' ground game.
Indianapolis regained the lead with a monster 60-yard field goal by Grupe, making it 16-13. But Darnold wasn't finished. The rejuvenated quarterback led Seattle down the field one final time, finding Smith-Njigba for crucial completions. Myers booted through a 56-yard field goal with just seconds remaining to give Seattle an 18-16 victory.
The game ended dramatically when Rivers threw an interception on the final play, sealing Seattle's hard-fought win.
Looking Ahead
This victory improves Seattle to 11-3 and strengthens their playoff positioning significantly. Their balanced attack and opportunistic defense make them dangerous contenders. Meanwhile, Indianapolis falls to 8-6 and their playoff dreams are hanging by a thread after this fourth straight loss.
Both teams will look to bounce back next week as the regular season winds down and playoff races intensify across the league.
