Steelers Hold Off Vikings 24-21 in Thrilling Week 4 Showdown
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings entered Week 4 with championship dreams dancing in their heads. This game took place in Dublin, Ireland as a part of the NFLs international games.
The First Quarter
The Vikings came out swinging in the first quarter, looking like the complete roster everyone expected them to be. Carson Wentz found his favorite target Justin Jefferson repeatedly, connecting on multiple passes as Minnesota marched down the field. Jefferson, who entered the game as the league's most consistent elite receiver, showed exactly why he commands so much respect from opposing defenses. The Vikings capped off their opening drive with a field goal from Will Reichard, taking an early 3-0 lead.
But Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers had other plans. The veteran quarterback, playing what he announced would be his final season, methodically led Pittsburgh down the field. Running back Kenneth Gainwell, the versatile veteran who joined Pittsburgh this season, became Rodgers' go-to weapon. Gainwell punched in a one-yard touchdown run to give the Steelers a 7-3 advantage after the first quarter.
The Second Quarter
The second quarter belonged to DK Metcalf and his cannon-armed quarterback. Metcalf, who signed that massive $150 million contract after being traded from Seattle, reminded everyone why he's worth every penny. The big receiver caught a stunning 80-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers, showcasing the deep-ball connection that makes this Steelers offense so dangerous. Pittsburgh led 14-6 at halftime after Minnesota managed another field goal.
The Third Quarter
Pittsburgh continued their dominance in the third quarter as Gainwell found the end zone again. The running back, who has become a perfect fit in Arthur Smith's offensive system, scored his second touchdown of the game on a four-yard run. The Steelers stretched their lead to 21-6, and it looked like they might run away with this contest.
The Fourth Quarter
But championship-caliber teams never quit, and the Vikings proved their mettle in the fourth quarter. Wentz, despite throwing two interceptions earlier in the game, led a furious comeback attempt. He connected with an unlikely hero for a 16-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 24-14. Minnesota wasn't finished yet – they scored again to make it 24-21, setting up a nail-biting finish.
The Vikings got the ball back with just over a minute remaining, needing a touchdown to complete the comeback. Wentz tried to work his magic one more time, finding Jefferson and other receivers as they desperately moved down the field. But the Steelers defense held strong when it mattered most, and Rodgers was able to kneel down and secure the victory.
Looking Ahead
Jefferson finished with an impressive 126 receiving yards on 10 catches, proving once again why he's considered the best receiver in football. Gainwell was the star for Pittsburgh, rushing for 99 yards and those two crucial touchdowns on 19 carries, while also contributing 35 receiving yards. Metcalf added 126 receiving yards of his own, including that spectacular 80-yard scoring strike.
This victory keeps the Steelers rolling at 3-1 and puts their position as the #2 seed in the competitive AFC. For Minnesota, the loss drops them to 2-2, but they showed the fight of a team that won't give up on their championship dreams. Both teams will look to bounce back next week as they continue their quests for playoff positioning.
