NBA Christmas Day Games: Rising Stars & Proven Champions
Christmas Day is one of the biggest days on the NBA calendar. The league puts its best teams and biggest stars on national TV, giving fans a full day of basketball. This year’s slate features rising young teams, aging dynasties, and several games that could matter a lot when playoff time arrives.
Cleveland Cavaliers (17–14) vs. New York Knicks (20–9) — 12:00 PM ET
The Knicks start Christmas Day as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Jalen Brunson has been outstanding, and Karl-Anthony Towns gives New York size and shooting that stretches defenses. They look like a real contender in a year when the East is wide open.
Cleveland has struggled to match last season’s success, but they still have elite talent. Donovan Mitchell can take over any game, and Evan Mobley anchors one of the league’s best defenses. This matchup feels like an early playoff test for both teams.
San Antonio Spurs (22–7) vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (26–4) — 2:30 PM ET
This game is a battle of the NBA’s present and future. Oklahoma City has dominated the league behind MVP-level play from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a deep, elite defense. They enter Christmas as the championship favorite.
San Antonio, however, has already beaten the Thunder twice this season, proving they are not afraid of the league’s best team. Victor Wembanyama continues to grow into superstardom, and the Spurs’ fast improvement makes this one of the most exciting games of the day.
Dallas Mavericks (12–19) vs. Golden State Warriors (15–15) — 5:00 PM ET
Dallas is rebuilding, but rookie Cooper Flagg has given fans hope for the future. Anthony Davis still anchors the defense, even as the team learns to play together. This season has been about growth more than wins.
Golden State is fighting time. Stephen Curry remains great, but the roster is aging and thin. Jimmy Butler brings toughness, but the Warriors need wins to stay in the playoff race. This game is about pride and staying relevant.
Houston Rockets (17–10) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (19–9) — 8:00 PM ET
The Rockets have officially arrived as contenders. Kevin Durant gives them a go-to scorer, while their young core plays tough defense every night. Houston believes it can beat anyone.
The Lakers counter with star power. Luka Dončić controls the offense, LeBron James is still elite, and Deandre Ayton fills a major hole at center. This matchup has playoff intensity and some of the biggest names in the league.
Minnesota Timberwolves (20–10) vs. Denver Nuggets (21–8) — 10:30 PM ET
The night ends with a Western Conference showdown. Anthony Edwards has turned Minnesota into a serious threat with his scoring and confidence. The Timberwolves believe they can reach the Finals.
Denver responds with Nikola Jokić, one of the smartest and most dominant players in basketball. With Jamal Murray healthy, the Nuggets are chasing another championship run. This game feels like a postseason preview.
From rising superstars to proven champions, this year’s Christmas Day schedule shows where the NBA is headed. Some teams are chasing titles, others are building for the future, but every game tells a story. By the end of the day, fans may have a much clearer picture of who is truly ready to contend.
